Hello

Well to make a long story short, it took me 31 years to get a boat.
I just bought a 14' lummi. It has a bow ride, sterring wheel, windshield, and top tarp. The trailer is home made but real nice. I paid $500cdn for it and it came with :

1957 18 Johnson
1957 5.5 Johnson
195x 60 mccolloch flying scott
196x 35 Johnson

They all needed a little fix.

I sold all but the 5.5 because of the New government crap on boats.
Under 9.9 your bank account is safe 4 now.

So I got the boat all cleaned up with all the lights working.
Now I need to get the 5.5 running

It leaks oil from the bottom right behind the prop.
How do I fix this leak??

Also how do I clean the carb on this old engine??

I got it to fire up but it won't stay running.

What spark plug do I run on this engine??

I found out the mixture of the gas/oil should be 24:1 is this right???

I have some pics at home I post later......

Cheers

And

Thanks

:)

you are in luck. laingsoutboards.com carries all the maintainance parts. order a carb kit and float. the carbs is a simple lawn mower carb. plugs were originally J6J replace by J6C gapped at .030 if you are planning or runing fast, it planning on slow trolling gap them at .040, cuts down on fouling. points are gapped at .020. 24:1 is correct. they are noted at that age for needing new flywheel guts, while there just do it all. points, condensers, coils and wires. and a new impeller. to totally renew it around $150 US.

congrat's on finally getting into boating! I'm curious what the government issues you're talking about? Enforcing EPA standards in national parks or something else?

Also, the oil leak you're talking about... behind the prop there is a port that is where the exhaust comes out. It is completely normal to have it drip blackish (or sometimes milky) oil stuff out of there, especially if it's been used alot for trolling. That's just where the unburnt oil/gas/and water mixture come out, and sometimes the inside of the exhaust passage in the leg has a vile coating of the stuff.

This MAY be all that is leaking. The gear case has gear oil in it, there shouldn't be water in that, nor should it be leaking out anywhere.

Re: Finally Now I need your help 57/ 5.5

Just this year the man is in our pockets more. Now all boaters have to have a license and insurance on their rigs over 9.9hp

I am still having problems with the money grabs they put on the vehicles.
You have to be living in Ottawa with big bucks just to have toys these days.

Anyhoot.

5.5 beats the system.

I thank you for the help. Is there a manual I can get online to rebuild the whole motor.

I think because the oil is no stop leak there is a problem with the bottom end holding the oil.

I got it to run a few seconds last night. But it is going to need some work.

Thanks for the tips.

I knew about the boat operator's license thing, but where did you get the bit that all rig's above 9.9 need insurance? Is that an Ontario thing? I haven't heard that before. Do you have a link to some gov't source?

Thanks.

Welcome to iboats...

I too live in ontario but have never heard of the restrictions you're talking about. I have a 200 hp and dont need insurance, i have it anyways in case anyone gets hurt on my boat, but dont need it. YOu also have until 2008 to get your license, only need one if you were born after 1983, which i dont think you were, lol, or if you're on a jet ski. In relation to your motor, there are a couple threads you should read, ill post them below, gl

Wow great links. Gotta love forums, you guys are great.

Just trying to put together a list of parts I'll need to rebuild this sucker.

Last night I was looking at the bottom and the PO has siliconed up all the bolt holes. I wonder why??? Should there be gaskets or is it worn out
