Well, I know this has been hashed around a lot, but I have to say that they really put together a great add there.

No break in:

Runs without oil for what, 15 Min. or so:

If I were going to buy a new engine, well, I really think I would go Evenrude. Granted, it was a commercial, but it was also quite convincing. I guess I just like the smell of 2 stroke in the morning.

I think the infomercial said 5 hours without oil!

I saw it today myself. How does it do everything they claim? Better mileage and fewer emmissions than a 4 stroke, and can limp home without oil! Must be some recently declassified alien technology. It sounds too good to be true.

What happens after 5 hrs? Does it run at idle without oil forever?

Close. If you read the literature close youll see there is indeed some "rocket science" involved. Literally.

As far as the No Break In and running with no Oil (limited RPM ) what are they doing to get that - Cryo. freeze the Block??? Moly rings ???
Area 51 technology ??? If you got to shoot me then don't tell me.

Re: Finally saw the etec info mercial.

I gotta see a full throttle full load 5 hour run test with no oil.at idle no load it should do 5 hours while burning up what oil is left in the crankcase. a critical test would be assemble and run it with no oil from intial fire up.
now that would be a test :) I would like to see an E-tec lined upwith an HPDI or a opti-pop under independant testing. the torque and HP curve on a 4 stroke is to different to compare with a 2 stroke.

if ou watch the infomercial you should notice the disclaimer at the bottom of screen which says something like all test results have been independantly verified.
you can bet that bombardier does not want to get sued.
the 5 hour spec for a no oil condition is to get you home and fill oil tank or repair problem its a reality because of low rpm and over built componet parts. the e-tec on infomercial runs away from merc 4-stroke and hpdfi
its not supposed to let you run at full power full load with no oil

rodbolt,

You're missing the point. NO engine will run, without oil, at WOT.

The e-tec "derates" to about 1500 rpm to get one home (about 5-hours-with no damage).

Yep, you're right, Suzuki, for one, dealt with that by installing a reduction gear, under the powerhead. If an engine, regardless of what it is, is set up right and it won't run with the competition, maybe it's not the best choice.

Remember, IT WAS AN INFOMERCIAL.

Maybe Bombi has a winner here. Don't let bias be the judge.

Re: Finally saw the etec info mercial.

I finally got my 69 years young mother to tape it for me, as it was not broadcast in my area, or atleast I could not find it. Watched it today. Kindof disappointed. I was hoping to get a little info on the "alien technology." Instead, just the sales pitch catch phrases. Mom even commented that it sounded like a used car sales pitch and that she was waiting for them to dazzle her with the details, but there were none.

Did I mention that I have a pretty sharp minded and cool mother?
I'd let her pick out my next boat for me, no problem. :)

I saw the infomercial a few weeks back. Though, I've always been a Johnson/Evinrude fan, it was a little heavy on the slick marketing hype for my liking, reminiscent of the typical too good to be true infomercial. Nonetheless, if the E-tec motors do everyting claimed they should be very successful. One thing I questioned about the "shootout" with Merc and Yamaha was the limited information about the prop. I think they said something like "equipped with factory prop". There certainly can't be just one factory prop for each of these motors respectively. Prop selection could cetainly affect the results of the "shoot out" dramatically.

Re: Finally saw the etec info mercial.

hey McGR, i also had questions/ comments about the "factory prop"

at the point when they fitted the boat with 2 motors, i being the ETEC 225, and the other being the YAMAHA 4 STROKE 225, the yamaha only did 13 mph, and the etec did some thing like 26 or 30 mph. they said, FACTORY PROP.

this is easily concealed. if the yamaha had a 24pitch prop and the ETEC had a 15pitch prop, that would definately do just as they showed. they also did not mention rpms of each motor, either during the DRAG RACE or during the yamaha VS etec on the same boat.

regardless, if i bought a new motor, it would be an etec. just simply cause nobody else is offering anything new and neat. merc is offering something new, the verado, but i think they musta been retarded when they designed that new anchor, what a stupid idea.

Re: Finally saw the etec info mercial.

I tend to agree
the EFI concept was proven over the past 30 years and was converted easily two outboards.
the HPDI has been around in some jap cars for 40 years but did not make the conversion very well. the FICHT and Orbital conversions were dismal failures mostly due to poor electronics. I hope the reconfiguered FICHT (E-TEC) works better. however until I see some actual real world customer abused motors in the 1500 hour range I quit reccomending any of them.
positive displacement high RPM motors have never been reliable. I gotta see one with 2 years of salt crud injestion and year old fuel run reliably. so far the few in my area have been a bit less than reliable.
I have no particular Bias. they all break :) :) . but I am gunshy of slick marketing. figgues dont lie but liars can figgure.

Who remembers the prolong oil additive infomercials?
rodbolt has a good point, lets not be overly optimistic, we need to allow this motor the time to prove itself

Re: Finally saw the etec info mercial.

yep the old Dura-lube commercials. after treatment they pulled the oil pan plug and left it on the table and drove the car some 200 miles. but the day was cool, the route carefully chosen flat and best I remember the speed was only 30 MPH or so. but ya had to read the fine print to get that part. and they never did say if the motor was torn down afterwards.
so no bias, just want to see how they last in the real world. will they live when it overheats as well ?
how about a run test with no cooling water ??

Now, even though the Prolong was proven to be a farce, they have come out with a Prolong oil.
