Finally, Spray Painting Boat Question

After month's of sanding, filling, and fiberglassing I'm almost ready for paint. The boat is an open bow 17', that is sanded in spots through the gel coat, but not the entire boat. I will be spraying primer and topcoat and don't know how much to buy. I will be trailering it, so no anti-fouling is needed. I need some advice on what interlux products to buy. One part or two, primer, cleaner, thinner, etc.? I want a paint that can be used above the water, as well as below, probably off white if they make such a paint for both, for boats. Cars are alot easier to spray(and cheaper). I'm already way over budget for this restore build, so any good advice is certainly appreciated. 84 ASI Imperial-Craigs list nightmare.

I would spot prime any bare fiberglass before the full prime :) .

I think any 2 part paint is going to be better for you. Shop around for paints before you make up your mind. Interlux isnt the only option hehee ;) .

YD.

PS. If you use the Interlux ( brightside or perfection ) you might consider thinning. ( from what I remember about that stuff it says not to reduce..or up to 10 % .. thats only because they need to sell the stuff in VOC restricted areas ;) ).

Re: Finally, Spray Painting Boat Question

thanks for the tip YD, but where can I find some spot primer and whats its name? Do you think glazeing putty is needed, or will the spray on primer and wet sanding do the trick. Have you ever heard of using auto paint on boats, and will it last more than 1 or 2 seasons.

Ayuh,... I use 2-pt Urethane all the time...
The paint don't know whether the can says Auto, or Marine,...
It's still 2-pt urethane...

Martin Seynor is the brand of My choice,...
I recommend you use a System, from 1 Manufacturer,....
Primer, topcoat, etc...

Glazing putty over raw glass is needed before prime ( you will get pinholes in the primer unless its a real High build primer.

Look at my siggy..thats a 53 footer that I painted using auto BCCC.

Yup..the primer you would spot prime with is the same you would use for your full prime ( just mixed in small proportions ) and from the same manufacturer as Bond-o suggested. Two part epoxy primers are the best IMO..

Paint Question 101

Paint Question 101

I'm going to paint my 84 Imperial, and need to find a paint I can use for under the water as well as above. The boat will be trailer, and not docked very long. I'm going to use a 2 part primer for the hull like interprotect 2000. If anyone knows of a paint I should use, please let me know. Thanks, Mike

Re: Paint Question 101

Im sure that Im going to get bashed for this but I am using exterior house paint and roll and tipping it. From everything Ive read it will hold up just as good and looks nice as well, and at only $26 for primer and paint I cant complain, lol.

If you're not going to have it in the water for over a week at a time ever, any of the marine "topside" paints will be fine. So will good 'ol Rustoleum.
