I finally got my boat out for the first time yesterday. What a great feeling.

checked the wheel bearings, checked the lube in the lower unit, topped off the charge on the trolling motor battery and headed out. My friend lives right next door to a secluded boat launch so I decided to just drop it in the water and fire it up since there was not going to be anyone waiting to use the launch.

It took a few extra Pulls but the old Johnson fired right up and settled down to a nice smooth idle. It was rather windy and only about 45 degrees, but it was sunny and I was taking the Sea Monkey for a spin.

I dropped anchor in a few spots and tossed a jig tipped with a waxie out but no nibbles. I really didnt care, I was in my boat. :D

Shizzy, are you in St. Paul? Which lake? And the ice is out?

I'm not getting "Sweetheart" out of storage until May 1. Hoping to have the kind of success you had in getting her towed, launched, started and running. She was new last year, so this will be my first attempt at waking up the girl. A lot depends on how well the dealer had her winterized. Crossing fingers.

Im glad to hear you enjoyed yourself. You are right, sometimes not catching anything can still make a great day.

Re: finally took the boat out!!

I haven't made my first spring launch yet, here in St. Paul, but I set up the boat after the Winter earlier this week and ran the outboard in a barrel yesterday. The Johnson 6 hp fired up with the usual four pulls when cold, and ran just as beautifully as it did last October when I flipped the boat and took everything down to the basement.

We have a few days that will hit 60 degrees coming up, so I'll probably take it out on Gervais Lake in Little Canada on Monday or Tuesday. I'll take my panfish stuff, but won't catch anything...just like every year.

The couple of times I've been out fishing this year I've had my niece along ( she will be three in july ) Her idea of fishing is stirring and slapping the water with her fishing pole:eek::D. For the safety minded I do not have a hook tied to her line only a bobber. When we go slow she likes to help me steer, she has discovered that if she pushes the lever on the side of the boat forward the boat goes faster:eek:

Re: finally took the boat out!!

I usually use Gervais just for boat testing. I generally launch there for the first time each spring. I've never had much luck fishing it, but it's the closest lake to my house with a ramp. Lots of big, big carp in that lake though, and it's tempting to try to catch them.

I fish Bald Eagle most often, but like Owasso, too, and have caught some nice bass and pike there. I hit Phalen once each year, too.

I'm going to try to hit more of the lakes near 36 this year, though. This year, I'm going to check out Johanna, too, for sure...I've been meaning to. We'll probably run across each other one day. I fish weekdays exclusively...too crowded on weekends.

Re: finally took the boat out!!

the trick with Gervais and Kellar is to fish the spots that arent supposed to hold fish. Im not really sure why that is, but it is.

I havent tried any of the other lakes during open water yet.
