Finding plugs

Hi.

I'm sure this question gets asked a lot, but I have a 1995 Sea Ray with a Mercruiser 4.3LX. Attempting to winterize it, I'm to the point of pulling the drain plugs. I don't have the manual (although I have a 1994 service manual), but I know there should be 4 or 5 plugs.

On my boat, the plugs are brass and are not exactly hand removable. I found one that held a LOT of water on the bottom of the block, left side (facing aft), about 3/4 of the way back. It was brass. I found one on each exhaust manifold, both brass, but at some point had been painted black...in other words, they didn't stand out. Opening these let water out (so I assume they're the drain plugs).

That's it, I can't find any others. I know I should drain the thermostat housing (located just front of the flame arrestor with two hoses into it, right?) and the power steering cooler (I don't know exactly where this is or how to identify if I have power steering....I think so since the steering is controlled by a black tube running aft from the steering wheel).

I don't want to go taking hoses off since, well, I already tried. I took the clamp off but couldn't get the hoses to so much as slide back a slight bit....they're on there good.

Lastly, I'm planning on running non-toxic antifreeze through the system via a set of muffs. Given that this antifreeze should push the water out, how imperative is it to get all the drain plugs/hoses drained?

Re: Finding plugs

Update....I found a 4th plug, right side facing aft, WAY back on the bottom of the plug.

I figured out I have power steering too, and found the p/s pump, but have no idea where the cooler is. Any help?

Re: Finding plugs

alright, I'm going to keep posting here...bear with me.

I traced the power steering system and found where the cooler hose runs up from under the block towards the thermostat. I cannot find a drain plug for the life of me.

So.....I take it I need to remove the hose. I took the clamp off, but getting that hose to budge without damaging it seems impossible. Any tips/advice on how to get it off?

Thanks.

Re: Finding plugs

Spray some WD-40 on it. when draining water from the engine & manifolds make sure you get ALL the water out, Use a nail or long sheet metel screw and stick it up in the hole while draining the water, sometimes little flakes of iron will clogged the drains.

WD-40? Sounds like a good plan. Sure enough, it's raining here now, so trying that out will have to wait. Thanks for the tip though. I really don't understand why Merc wouldn't put a drain plug at the power steering cooler...getting to the hose clamps requires the hands of a 7 year old and the flexibility of a contortionist.

Work a flat blade screwdriver around the hoses, they will come off.
The antifreeze with muffs is a bad idea...

Have to agree with Gary!!!
In the absence of a hose pick, I'll lift a spot of the sturborn hose and give it a squirt of the first spray lubricant my hand reaches. Then work your way around the offender until the lubricant soaks all around....usually the hose just slides off. :)

Re: Finding plugs

What about the outdrive though, wouldn't there be water in it? Should running the antifreeze through the muffs not solve that problem?

I was in the process of doing this last night, when sure enough I dropped one of the drain plugs into the engine bay. A solid hour of looking for it turned up nothing, apparently they dissolve when dropped. Hopefully the local marina has a replacement for me.

What about pouring anti-freeze into the hoses....good idea?

Have you read any of the winterizing information in the Adults Only sticky at the top of this forum?
