Fine tuning my carb in acceleration

Got my new engine carb together. Old engine/carb ran fine once. Everything as original. 2300 holley, 5.0GL. I did take the old tuning parts off old carb (jets, cam, squirter) to try to duplicate good running. Idles great, around 700, cruises great 50+ mph. Trying to fine turn acceleration. Have a 50cc pump. I have considered several things, cam and squirter.
-book says use red holley cam but I get a backfire with red on acceleration. I put the yellow on it it accelerates better but not perfect.
1. If I am cursing and give a little gas, I get a hesitation and then it speeds up.
2. If I have a backfire on acceleration, is that a lean or rich condition?
3. How do I know if I need to go to a bigger squirter or smaller? I have the squirter off the original carb cause it seems to work fine on the old carb.

Any thoughts? Thanks

also, is a 50cc accelerator kit actually required? have you tried the stock 35cc?

Scott - Power valve is about 4.5. That was according to the manual. I have tried other sizes up and down but this size did work the best.

The boat came with the 50cc and that worked great on the old setup. The older same model/setup carb worked fine previously. I am sure I have something I have missed.

Make sure the pump lever is adjusted correctly

I had good luck in the past curing a lean off-idle pop with the green cam.
