I have been fixing my boat up and the help I have received on this forum has been great Ty all. I have a mer cruiser 228 it has a 305 and is 1981. We have got the motor running great, But are having trouble with the gear shift and some fine tunning. I have been trying to find out how to lube the lower unit, and see if there is anything else I should be greasing or checking.

You need manuals 4 for your drive and 3 for your engine. Download em, read em, then let us know what your problems are, in detail.

But are having trouble with the gear shift and some fine tunning

Not much info in that statement.

Whats the trouble with the shifting??????

What needs fine tuning??????

Lower unit lube, is put in from the bottom hole with a pump. Costs about 12 bucks at Gander Mountian, or any marina/ repair shop.

As for the grease, Any place that has a zerk.

Re: fine tunning

I'm sorry the gear shifting thing I have a few Ideas. When I put the boat into forward the prop makes a grinding noise very slight. Than begins to turn. After that if we put it in neutral or reverse the motor dies. I am gonna try to put in a new linkage tomorrow, but I was told it might be a micro, something or other not sure of the name, it is almost like a toggle switch I am told. I don't know a lot about stern drives. I have been told you have to grease the lower unit. I was not sure how to do that. Plus I don't know if anything should be checked for safety. Sorry if coming off vague just trying to anticipate prob before they happen lol.

Re: fine tunning

vague questions get vague answers.

As for shifting, the lower shift cable can cause both in and out of gear problems.
Putting it into gear and hearing the ratchiting could be no more than slow gear changing, or a bad cable, or too high an idle speed.

Re: fine tunning

Ty. another quick question. About how hot should the motor be running at idle, and pushing it? Using the hose right now, but will be in salt when I get it in the water.
