Finished new project kicker motor

I got that 64 'rude 9.5 horse running good and re-painted it. It was in sad cosmetic shape. For some unknown reason, someone had covered the entire shroud in a 1/8th inch skim of bondo and painted it with house paint. It was cracked, and looked really bad. I took a hammer to it and knocked all the bondo off. The original paint was still there, but otherwise there was no reason to bondo it, the shroud was in fine shape. I decided to update the look a bit, because this generation of motors have a fairly modern look to them.

I went with a dark charcoal gray that was an OEM OMC color, and ordered a set of current decals. I think it turned out pretty nice. My end result is a motor that is almost twice a powerful as my 5.5 horse 57, it is the same weight, and has a good look to it.

My goal now is to register the boat Monday morning, and go out and do some fishing. It will be a shakedown run for the planerboard mast I built last fal, the planerboard set I built as well as this new/old kicker...

Looks REALLY nice there Jason J. I like the choice in color/decal. I used to have one of those "fatboys" until someone stole it off of little aluminum I had in a river near here. There are really neat liile beasts, and I had been looking around for one for awhile........ until my project motor fell into my hands. I think those motors are prolly some of the best OMC ever put out, my little fisherman being the second best.

How did you paint the motor? With spay paint or a compressor?

Looks very good to me.

Re: Finished new project kicker motor

Thanx guys...Realgun, I used 1 can of zinc chromate primer and two cans of OEM Johnson/Evinrude paint I bought at my local marine shop. I have a compressor and all that, but sometimes its just easier to rattle-can it.

Great results.
One of the things I learned in trying to rebuild my '84 Johnson 2hp was don't take the starter rope assembly apart. At least next time I'm not going to start until I have the manual. It runs good now, thanks to the dealer's mechanic.

Garrett, I didn't rebuild the motor, I just cleaned it up and painted it. It runs great after some fresh coils and a carb cleaning. The paint, I spent about 25-ish bucks or so...

Well that what I was hopeing the hear. I want to paint my old Force. As its Black or very dark grey it gets to hot to touch. Not from running but from the sun here. I want to paint it white with a burgundy and medium grey stipe. I know tape will work but what fun is that?

Jason, nice work...a few questions if you don't mind.
I have the same motor I'm going to set up for a kicker/troller on my 16' tri-hull.
What mount are you using and are there any dimensional issues with the short shaft on your 9.5 .That is clearance between motor and transom on tiller handle when dropped down for use. Do you have a tie rod to your main motor for steering or do you use the tiller.

Thanks a bunch

Re: Finished new project kicker motor

Indy, its not a shortshaft. It looks like one because of its design, but it is a 20 incher. I simply put it on my kicker mount, and ran it. There is no issue with the tiller handle in the down position or when it is tilted. I used a rod with heim joints on each end. One end is permanently mounted to my main motor. The other end uses a butterlfy nut to hold it onto a stud that is mounted to the kicker. When deployed, I unhook the kicker end of the tierod from a stowage stud on the main motor, and affix it to the stud on the kicker. It just takes a moment to do this.

On the other kicker I had, I did not need to do this because the rod was long enough and all the angles and such were okay enough that the two motor could stay connected regarless of either motors position. With this kicker I could not do that so I compromised. It works fine.

I´m very impressed. Just fixed up a 1976 Rude 6HP Twin for a back-up and although it was one of these rare cases that did not need paint or decals, I almost wish it had - looking at the way you made the decals blend into the paintwork - it´s a superb job.
