Today I finished the restoration of the hull and topsides, the engine, Mercruiser 350 with pre alpha outdrive started well, but when brought to an idle stalled out. Also the boat has a jackshaft. The rear end of the drive train is making an intermittent knocking or banging sound prior to the engine dying at idle. It is some kind of a mechanical banging, which doesnt seem to happen at higher rpms.
The gas is old, the boat is probably 6 mos plus since run, and I am just looking for ideas as where to start with the troubleshooting and repair. I have plenty of time so I will attemp to fix this by myself. Thanks for the advice fellow boaters.
