I have an opportunity to pick up a nice racing sailbaot for cheap but need to know a little more about it first.
there is a metal plate inside the boat that reads Newport Boats #761 Newport beach California.
It is 14ft 10 inches in length with a 60 inch beam. Wooden mast stainless steel liftable keel.
I was told it was the first planing hull sailbaot design.
I am especially interested in year of maunufacture and designer.
One more thing<
The sail has the number 761 on it. The same number that is on the metal plate.

What are you looking to do with it ?

http://www.ussailing.org/Olympics/classes.htm

Designed by Swedish sailor Rickard Sarby in 1949, the boat was the winner of a design competition to provide the best possible singlehanded boat for the 1952 Olympics in Finland. The new Finn challenged the sailor to the maximum, which immediately attracted many competitors. The Finn remains today as the oldest continuous class in Olympic sailing. Over 12,000 of the boats have been built worldwide and at least 65 nations have active Finn fleets.
IF it is a Finn its REALLY REALLY OLD and there were a LOT of different builders all over the world

If you want to have some fun and go sailing it will be a blast

If you want to race Finns it really wont get out of its own way compared to the ones they build NOW with modern materials

tommays

Thanks for the reply. As far as what I am planning on doing with the boat I am as yet undecided. After reading how hard it is to sail this particular boat I am leaning on selling it and buying a new motor for my fishing boat.

Yep, Finns can be a handful, but they're heaps of fun... give it a go before you sell it, it may change your mind.
