Hope this one will assist other boaters..Last trip out with 18 ft. kenner and 115hp Johnson it catches on fire under the bonnent and the water around the lower unit..Grab fire extinguisher,
point aim and squeeze an NADA comes out..Guage shows full but all go juice had leaked out..Still felt heavy and was not empty but would not propel inards. Daaaa..Fire burned itself out fortunately
Moral..Buy a new fire extinguisher ever year or so.

Same trip lost tire and wheel off single axel boat trailer..Sheared 4 of 5 lugs completely off before wheel came off and passed up towing vehicle. Reason? Over tightened lugs with 4 way lug wrench..Stressed them out and caused them to shear off...Correct torque for lugs seems to be 70 pounds..Was a new 3500 axel, new oil filled hub
new lug nuts, new wheel, new springs, new "U" bolts, and new tire..

Bad trip other than we got home OK..BTW..Caught no fish either <G>

So, you'll be buying a torque wrench on monday? They're pretty cheap and a lot less expensive than what you went through lately. BTW, check out the lugs on your cars, also.PDS.

Re: Fire extinguisher? & Trailer lug nuts

Sounds like the last time me and dad took his boat out. He had been saying for about two years that he needed to replaace the axle (single axle trailer under a little 15' tri-hull). We were heading to a lake WAY up from the house, and we got to within sight of the lake and all the sudden dad exclaims "Holy Sh**!" while hopping on the brakes. Blue smoke is boiling out from under the port side of the trailer. We got out and inspeced, found that the axle had had enough and gave up, breaking at the port side spring where it had rusted pretty much all the way through.

OK, we strip the boat on the spot (so that some of nice helpful locals out there wouldn't strip it for us :D ) load everything into the back of the truck and head to the place where they make trailers out on highway 90 near his house. We get there and the guy tells us all the measurements we need to take so they can fab a new axle for us. We head home to his house, off load the truck, get some tools, head to my house for my big floor jack and back out the 50 miles to the boat. We arrive and the boat is still there, jack it up, pull the old axle, take the measurments and go to a little country store and phone them into the trailer place. Then we drive 50 miles back to the trailer place where they have the new axle waiting (they were so nice to drop what they were doing and build us a new axle like that), pick up the new axle, go to dads house, load up stuff we'll need for fishing with the new axle and tools and stuff, and drive 50 miles back to the boat. We get there, install the new axle and springs, hitch up the boat and drive 500 yards to he lake. Fished for an hour or so, caught nothing and headed home. What a day :)

Dry chemical fire extinguishers have a bad habit of the powder packing down in the bottom and not working, once a year or so give a it a few good shakes until you feel the powder moving around.

I just started taking Automotive Service Tech classes here at the local comunity college. I was really surprised to find out what 100 ft/lbs of torque felt like. All these years I've been cranking down on my 4-way lug wrench to "make sure they were good and tight". I wont be making that mistake again.

The other one to watch out for is when you take your car to have new tires put on it, or a state inspection station removes your tires to check the brake pads. Sometimes the inexperienced employee puts the lug nuts back on with an impact wrench set all the way to max torque (or the opposite or misses tightenting some). Result: you either can't get the darn things off when you have a flat or worse. I always check them with a torque wrench first thing when I get home and set to 90-100 ft-lbs, and 9 times out of 10 they are way over-tight. As another FYI, overtorqued fasteners can be worse than loose ones, as over-torqueing can stretch the metal beyond its elasticity point which permanently weakens it drastically. Fasteners that have been significantly over-torqued should be replaced when used in critical applications.

Back when we had thefamily dealership I was trying to sell a new car to a gentleman who politely told be that he was going to run his car till the wheels fell off (his car was in for inspection). Apparently one of our mechanics didn't tighten the lug nuts enough because 3 days later I got a call for the wrecker - his left front whell fell off! Ooopppss! Fortunately no one was hurt and there wasn't much damage done to the big ole' Toronado.

Side note - he still didn't want to buy a new car, even after he drove the old one till the wheels fell off! :D

I too learned about how much pressure to place on a bolt from auto mechanics class in high school. That was years ago. I then learned I could at times break a bolt off that had the nut welded on from rust and what not. Well, ironically this past summer I broke my hand doing that. I slipped in the wet grass and smashed my hand onto some metal. I was trying to remove the bolt from a spare tire on my pop up camper.

I ended up getting a saw blade attachment for the drill. The wife had to help me of course when the vibrations got to bad for my hand. Which was in a cast by then. I really didn't know the thing was broke until she came home and looked at it.

Its also crucial that the recommend torque specs be used for many vehicles with alloy rims as to no cause fractures due to over tightning, and also to follow the torque pattern , since many cars and trucks today with 4 wheel disk brakes rely on the wheel to hold the brake rotor against the hub, if wheels are not torqued correctly, brake rotor can be warped..I know Its happened to me twice on my Cougar XR7.
