Hi , got a'82 rebuilt 228 (305) mercruiser on 24.5 searay ...was having point problems ...local dealer convinced me 3 yrs ago to go "pertronix" did so , ran new wire from switch to + side of coil ran great rest of yr. .... had misfire problem mid season last year bought new coil /cap button plugs@ (.035) ...was back in action ...this year same deal ...runs great with muffs ...1+ mile down river @ 2800 rpm runs great ,(test) got him to bump the throttle starts bustin up (over 3 grand)...carried timming light w/us yesterday ...over the 3 grand point , used light to check all wires for fire ..sure enough @ 3+ on tach and missing , had NO fire on #6.. intermtting fire on 3 others...oddley all on the 1-3-5-7 side while 2-4-6-8 kept good fire through out the whole test....cap & button / wires/plugs are less than a year old . am thinkin about the flame thrower(pertronix) coil (40,000v) @ this point..re-gapping plugs to .040 (supposed to increase spark+ power+ mpg's !!)
Question is which coil to get , they have different internal ohm values from 1.5 and up...I,m just so fustrated with this whole fireing issue. Is there a one in a million that i got a bad or faughty "pertronix" system from get go....I know or have heard you cannot leave key on with these, I wouldn't intentionally leave key on with any system , but it could have happened @ some point in 3 yrs...I've read other threads where 1 misfire can damage the module ??...others have been going strong for 6+ yrs and still going..has ANYONE had this experience?
When i first put the "pertronix" system in , it seemed to be the best thing sence sliced bread. now not so sure
thanx for any advice
