I upgraded all my smoke detectors in the house to the usual 120v with signal wire between them, one goes off, they all go off.

I have a detached shop, I would like to add to the system, but I can't put a regular smoke detector out there due to all the dust.

What's the best way to tie the 2 together? Do they make heat alarms to work along with the smokes?

And is there something that could tell me it was a house vrs shed setting off said alarm?

If I'm out in the workshop, and there is a fire in the house, I want to know about it before the fire dept knocks on the door to inform me.

Re: Fire/Security alarm gurus?

Well, you have a couple of options depending the control panel you have. Some controls have more than one alarm partition. Split the control into 2 partitions, make one partition the shop, the other the house. Both partitions will sound the fire siren/bell. You could also program a fire/burg. panel to have 2 separate fire zones, shop and house. Keypads will annunciate by zone if you have an activation in either zone. If supervised by a central monitoring service, have them call to verify the validity of a fire alarm before sending a truck. If they can't reach you, roll the truck....it saves on false alarm signals and associated charges too.
You can add 135 degree heat detectors in the shop or house. Two wire circuit with EOL (End Of Line) resistor supervision insures a broken wire won't disable your system without you knowing it. Your insurance company should offer a rebate for a working alarm system too.
