Our burn ban is lifted and folks are buring everything in sight. I have quite a few brush piles to get rid of but I think I'll wait.

Rain is on its way in the next few days however I hope it gets to the fires before this wind spreads it any further. Winds are about 30 mph this morning.

You Texans always have to do everything big! You know there are some things that are better left small - like fewer and smaller fires! Be safe all of you!

All I can say is pray for rain. Only downside is that rain grows the grass higher!

Re: fires in texas

Woke up this morning with the pager going off telling me the NWS had issued a several fire threat warning for our area because of the dryness and wind. I am thinking, WHAT? we have a dusting of snow on the ground and have had a good bit of rain! 10 minutes later the pager goes off - brush fire. Small and we got it out.

Then I start thinking - we got this here, what about our Texas and Southwestern friends where it is really dry? You guys and gals are certainly in our thoughts and prayers - and be careful with those controlled burns. Better to have a brush pile than burnt property.

Re: fires in texas

On the way home from work today I seen smoke about halfway inbetween my house and my farm, there 6 miles apart. I turn down the county road and the smokes getting thicker. Sure enough, big fire blazing. An old man, 70 ish (he he Mr Rice) is driving his tractor over it trying to put it out. I see his son who's about 40 with wet towels. I offer to call the fire dept but he says their on the way. I help him beat back the fire for about 5 minutes and I hear our sirens. The trucks show up and we get it out. I sure was scared cuz the wind had picked up quite a bit. I have 2 bales left and they have to last for about a month and a half, they ain't gonna make it. Horses are just gonna hafta eat leaves from the trees. We had to start earlier, are gonna have to feed hay longer, and at a lot higher price. Now its not even available. I'm putting out rye grass seed sat. hoping it takes. Its a little late and not real good for the horses but it beats dirt.
