Firestone motor 4.5 single

I am told that this is actually a Scott-Attwater, I should post pics , will later. There is a lever across from motor that moves left to right and back, tiller is solid with no throttle control. Front lever looks as it should engage top of carb but does not, should it?, How does thrtottle work? This is a work in progress after sitting in a boathouse for 35 years, amazing it shows good spark and compression.

Your outboard was made by Scott Atwater for the Firestone Tire Store chain.

The lever is the magneto spark advance and should be marked something like "stop, slow, start, fast" from left to right. It should be linked to the carburetor throttle in some fashion, so that moving the lever from left to right opens the throttle. Note: my info is based on other small outboards of the same era, but the Firestone should be the same.

Sounds like you have a Firestone 3.5 1 cylinder made by Scott-Atwater...Look for the number series 463 somewhere on the motor/powerhead. Sunkentreasure is right...that lever that moves from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock (think of a clock face) is the throttle/spark advance. Should start at around 5:30, slow and stop are from 6 to 9, fast & faster is 5 to 3. Look inside the carb throat with a flashlight...the butterfly should open as you move the lever from start to fast (all the way open). Spark and compression are good, so check the LU lube behind the drain screw on the gearcase, empty and clean the gas tank, line and carb and see if it will fire off with a 24:1 fuel mix. Put it on a sawhorse with the foot/leg as deep as it will go in a trashcan/tub/barrel. Those are nice, reliable little motors.
