Firing on just one cylinder

Just bought an 89 Johnson 48spl. I thought maybe the power pack was bad but both banks have fire, but it will only fire one cylinder. Plug wires are good. An old man said he had the same problem and a marina fixed it for a little of nothing. He also said that his engine would sometimes pick up and run on both. Any ideas? I hate to go buy a new pack but that's what I think it is. Thanxs a bunch !!!

firing on one cylinder is usually a bad coil, completely swap the coils, if the problem follows the coil replace it. the 89 48 is a great motor. what do you mean both banks have fire???

Well, the story I got from the old man's friend was that each wire from the power pack had fire. I thought about the coil also but the engine only has one coil so if it was bad it would have no fire. I personally think it is the power pack if in fact sometimes it kicks in both and other times not. He swears it is not but could not remember the other solution to the same problem he had on another boat.
