I want to fire this motor up to make sure it still runs but it has been de rigged.. With all controls disconnected, can I just pull it over and kill it with the choke?

Well I had to hook up power and rig the control box, because I couldn't pull it over fast enough.

Then I couldn't get it to fire. I sprayed mix into the intake with a spray bottle and it would run on that, but wouldn't pull from the carb.. Eventually I figured out that it wasn't getting fuel ( pulled float bowl drain and it was dry ) and my fuel hose must have gotten clogged. I happen to have a spare fuel hose which got fuel into the bowl but still won't run on it's own at all. I'm kind of stumped. It ran perfect last year and the carburator was squeaky clean as I had it apart.

anything can happen in a year ...I am afraid you must start eliminating problems areas one by one ...

you have some sparks since a shot of fuel in the carb produced some " explosions"

Past that stage you are in to cleaning the carb...yours a likely has a HS jet down below no the needle but same issues

Is the carb still squeaky clean? Not sure how a fuel line can clog and the carb or filter be clean. Are the fuel filters clean?

I think the primer bulb quit and one of the valves is stuck. The spare hose I have worked fine to get fuel in.. I haven't taken the carb off yet.

Primer bulbs appear to be confusing many folks.----They are nothing but a simple pump.-----Run carburetor empty after use.----Then on start up you operate the primer.-----It MUST move some fuel by feel.----Then go hard.-----That way you test the bulb / float valve / fuel tank / hose each time !!!----Once motor starts the bulb does not need to be rock hard.

I understand how the bulb works. But my one hose wouldn't pump fuel. I verified by opening the carb drain

Is it possible the needle/ seat/ float has stuck? I've had problems with that. Part of that may be due to the float / pivot which is sort of "riveted" to the cork float. They get loose and may bind in the bowl. Pulling the drain tells you if it's empty. If it has fuel there and won't run, there's gum in the orifices. Sometimes you can get them going by simply squirting some aerosol cleaner into the needle jet area (remove the idle needle as well as the bottom plug/ needle) and blow a little air gently through.

I NEVER hook up electrics to test them. If you need to crank it, just "rig" a scrap battery wire/ jumpers to the starter and a battery.

Main issues: Bad coils (epoxy cracks if coils are not recent) bad points and condensers. Bad water pump and water leaks into gearbox. If you pull the carb to clean it, take a light and look at angles into mainifold at reed plate, looking for signs of corrosion.

I have some of those from 55/ newer and if there's been no water intrusion into the carb/ block/ cylinders, and if they aren't worn out, they will run. Only other issue (not a big one) might be air leaks in through the upper / lower crank seals.

I can pump fuel into the carb with the primer bulb. I can pull the float bowl drain and verify this ( also perfectly clean coming out ). The spark is hot and it will fire up and run on mix sprayed into the carb. everything points to it should run. I even drained the fuel out of the carb before storage.

Model # is ??---Sounds like the high speed jet is plugged.-----Found in the very bottom of the bowl.------Does spark jump a gap of 1/4" with ease ?

time to clean the carb ....no fuel entering the crankcase... no fishing

remove bottom "drain plug" blow in carb cleaner is a minimum . pictures shows a HS needle but yours is a simple non ajustable orifice.

If there is fuel in the bowl and it won't fire then------Choke is not working .----Or weak spark.----Or carburetor is plugged.----Not cranking fast enuff.

I manually closed the choke. Yes I checked the spark and it's perfect. It's an RD-28. It's cranking as fast as it ever has..

I'll try some carb cleaner. I'm only doing this for the next guy so to speak. My boat now has an EFI 4 stroke

If you keep squeezing the bulb when it starts will it stay running?

If the carburetor is full the bulb has done it's job.-----Motor should start and run for more than a few seconds.

I've got two carbs off 40's that had the "no high speed needle" AKA fixed jets that I have yet to fix. The passages are difficult to get to as they turn a corner down in the bowl. I "fixed" one outboard by installing an earlier 35hp lower bowl and needle jet
