Well we all got together today and purchase what will be our home away from home on the water
A 24 foot lowe Pontoon with a '73 big Jon 115 Johnson

Now im just a little aprehensive about this one I've worked on my big twins and late 60's 20hps to the point that I think I could be considered an enthusiast. Now this is my very first big motor and its a little out of my league.
I look to you as the panel of experts.
This motor is of the model number 115esl73m its got what I'm told is a prestolite trim motor that has been dewired and its got a pretty thick coat of some "been in the water" muck

Any tips for a young outboard enthusiast with hogleg like this 115?

Re: first big john

Tips?
Same as your other motors.
Change the impeller if you don't know how old it is.
Check the gear oil.
Look the wiring over carefully, and clean all of the connections.

Do a compression check on the engine first. No point in putting any time/$ in an engine that has a dead hole. Should be aroung 125 lbs on each cyl.
