I just picked up my first boat it has a older johnson 70 hp motor. The guy I got it from started it up when the choke is pressed it stays started when released it dies he said the last time he ran it was in 2005. What can I check to get it running right tuneup etc. How can I find out the year of my motor so I what parts to pick up? This is all new so any help is appreciated.

Get up a model number so we know what you have, found somewhere on the motor mount.

You will want to change the impeller, clean the carbs, new spark plugs, change lower oil and work a compression check in there too then see where you are.

Wouldn't hurt to change fuel lines either if the engine more than 5-10 years old, make sure you get alcohol resistant line.

I woudl really suggest once you determine year that you get an OMC manual, NOT seloc.Clymers or any CD, either here or on Ebay, they are worth whatever you have to spend to get one.
