Well Hi to all, finally registered!
in fall of 2008 I bought a 19' Thundercraft Flamingo with a 260hp OMC 350 with a 800 drive. Paid about 2800$ with the roller trailer.
The guy that I bought it from had problem with the motor (would die when using too much throttle) and he had bought it from his boss who had rebuild the motor in 2004 (Carb sticker says 2004).
So I when to the river with it, runned for 10mins (not on plane), tryed to floor it and it died, opened the cab and there was 1" of gas boiling on the intake.
Carb was was stuck, drivepump impeller was shot (casing broken).
so I had the carb rebuilded, I winterized and left it like that.
2009, went once with it and 6 friends, had 5 hours of fun but still the same problem, if you would try to open the 4 barrels, it would die. Had one of them force the secondairy plates open and finally got on plane!
I started building my house, so I put it at a friend, until I realised it was -3C outside (forgot to winterized). Got there, the boat cover was filled with water and ice, torn appart... So to got the boat in my parents garage, left it there for 24h and drained the water. one of the butterfly valve under the block was not draining any water... looked at the oil, 3" over full DAMN!
drained the oil, put 2 gallons of 15w40, removed the plugs to fog the cylinder, put them back in and left it outside until 2 weeks ago.
Now, removed the tarp, put the battery back in, tryed to crank the motor, locked. looked at the oil, still milky from before the winter, 2" over full.
removed the plugs, water was in all cylinder! (Hydrolocked) tryed to crank it, it was turning with no problem, water shots from the plugs holes. drained the oil twice, still milky, checked compression, 125psi on all 8, tryed to fire the engine, not starting but was not getting any fuel, would try to start if I sprayed fuel in the primairy.
Removed the carb, rusted/jammed, the motor got flooded somehow by the carb with water. intake have rust inside.
Put a car carb (same Quadrajet) to test, got the motor started!, shut it down right away, put the muff and gave her a try, Motor running smooth, responsive but the secondairy lower butterfly would not move. I guess the gasket from the previous rebuild is not correct and interfering with the carb.
So changed the filter with a cheap fram, did 3 other oil change with 15w40 and Rislone additive to remove water in oil, now the oil is clear so the block/head didn't crack!
Now waiting for my boat carb to get rebuilded elsewhere (the secondairy shaft was bent, rusted) and will try her to be sure it can take load in the water. I'll put a good filter and 25w40 or 20w50 once I know the motor is good for a ride.
I'll get a rapid boat cover custom made, find a way to be sure no water can enter the engine bay from the top again (put aluminium Channels behind the seat).
Any recommendations?
