New to the site and boating. I picked uo a 86 vip kona with a mercruiser 140hp I/O and 124 hours on it. Before I take it out (it has been stored for 1 1/2 yrs) I think it should have some service done correct? Which manuals do you recommend? The outdrive was serviced after the last time it used (1/1/2 years) if that makes a difference. The serial number on the drive is 6926995 and the ratio is 1.98. I don't know enough about boats to know if it's a good combo or not. Overall I'm very happy with it(paid $1,300). Hopefully that wont change once I get on the water.
Thanks in advance

Re: First boat/ Mercruiser ?

what kind of inspection was done prior to purchase? did you get to water test it? comp test? how does the oil look? did you pull the spark plugs? how do they look? any water or chunks of metal in the drive lube?

how old is the gas? I would start with a tune-up.. replace all the filters.. might need to pump out all the gas depending on the age.. might be a good time to pull the drive and replace the impeller and also check everything else out and if nothing else grease everything..

I bought it off a friend and know he has taken care of it.He also owns a nice wellcraft in the chanel islands harbor. Like i said in my 1st post, He had the drive serviced (impeller included) after the last time he used the boat. That was 1 1/2 years ago. Plugs looked good. Oil looked great. Gas is 1 1/2 years old. He has only several hours on the boat since i went out with him last. I'm not to concerned about something major wrong.I know is was in great shape when put away last,I just want to maintain it correctly.Any manuals recommended over others? I build off road vehicles and hot rods for a living so with the right manual and guidence from you guys I'm sure I'll be able to handle it.

That was 1 1/2 years ago.

you still need to pull the drive, check alignment, replace the impeller, and grease everything.

DO NOT reuse any gaskets and seals, including the o-ring between the upper and lower units.

Nice Boat for $1300.00. I paid $2500.00 for my 86 Sea Sprite and it do not look as good as this one and it needed some work . Enjoy it.

I was able to pick up a full set of factory Mercruiser manuals on ebay for less than half of their regular cost. You will need to know which ones however. Start with your engine serial number for reference, I believe thats written on the fronts of the manuals. Someone more experienced on this forum will be able to tell you exactly which to get. Good Luck
