This was a fun project I tackled last summer...just now getting around to taking some pictures of the finished project.

It's a 1983 14' McKee Craft with a 1983 70hp Evinrude. I purchased it from a buddy's brokerage for a grand total of $800. Officially the cheapest boat sold at said Yacht Brokerage. I had to come in a 6am on a Sunday to do the deal so that I didn't ruin the reputation of the business:D.

All kidding aside it was a killer deal. Trailer was in fair shape, hull was in good shape and the motor was great for it's age. First step was to get the acetylene torch and welder out and fix some bad spots on the trailer, then replaced the leaf springs, hub assembly, bearings, and wheels/tires. Once that was complete I drug it back to G-boro and gave it a good scrubbing. We used it as is until late spring when the fun began!

Below pics are prior to purchase

Re: First boat restoration...14' McKee

Prior to gutting I went over the engine to the best of my ability:
Carb job, new fuel lines, rebuilt the fuel pump, de-carbed the engine, new plugs, new gaskets, new lower unit lube, etc.

I have never been too fond of side consoles and it just wouldn't work for the inshore Flounder Pounder I had in my head. Decided to convert to a center console for more room for spearguns, polespears, surfboards etc. Found a cheap console on ebay and designed the rest of the layout around it.

Once the gutting was complete...I was shipped overseas for the month. I returned in June and began 2 weeks of guerilla work detail! My fiancee even chipped in...though she learned a few lessons about working fiberglass in tank tops...she wouldn't listen! Had to replace the rigging tunnel cover as it was soft. Patched some old 3" rigging holes, removed the old lights and glassed over the holes and faired them smooth. We didn't have access to a sprayer so all of our paint was rolled and tipped. Turned out MUCH better than expected. The boat started to come around...with the help of ebay. Nearly everything was second hand, controls, LED Nav, Blue Sea switches, trailer LEDs, coolers...yadda yadda yadda. Had decals made for the boat and motor. Broke out the holesaws and jigsaw and tore into the blank console...managed that without needing to reglass, so that was a moral victory. Added a lockable hatch cover, tach, controls and the old steering assembly, which was interesting. It had to be mounted 90* off to fit with the controls in the narrow console. The wiring wasn't too bad for my first foray into wiring, built a bus block and ran it all through that and the Blue Sea switches. Chucked a bilge in it and the wiring was complete. Added some coolers/cushions for seating/storage, and splashed it. Then new controls and motor needed some finessing, and all was good...mostly. Still needs a different prop. The biggest PITA was sanding the old motor down to bare fiberglass and aluminum..then use an aluminum primer and some auto paint, and lastly auto clear coat. Slapped on the new decals and a color gps/sounder and stepped back and was amazed! For two boatwork noobs we were pretty pleased with the results...She's just waiting on her decals.

Hahaha I think I might pass on that one! This one is destined to be in the family for quite a while. Hopefully it has a big brother soon though...:D

Really really nice job. Looks much "bigger" than a 14 footer. I bet it fishes great.

Great Job Mattedhead.

I am almost there with my resto. Another 3 weeks and it should be in the water. If you ever fish Buggs Island I may see you on the water this summer.
