I finally succumbed to my urges and bought a boat. She is a 1964 GlassMaster with a 110 HP Mercruiser IO. Pictures will come soon, she is pretty rough but hey, now I got something to work on over the winter. New Floors, some transome repair, re-gel coat the top, new windshield, wiring, re-chroming. Then she will be like new!

Does anyone know what was different on the 153 CI engines where my year it was rated as 110 HP and then the next year it went up to 120 HP?

Re: First Boat!!!

Thanks for the advise./ I have seen a 120 head for sale recently. Maybe I will pick that up, get it machined (new valve seats for unleaded gas)mild port/polish. There was a Camshaft also for sale. Guess I should buy the repair manual and see what spec is and how healthy my engine is. and collect the rest of the parts as I need

I couldn't do a compression test at the time of purchase. It was a bit emotional to the family I bought the boat from. The owner passed away last year and he was the Patriarch of this family and had owned the boat since new. For the price, all I needed to see is that it ran (and it did)

Re: First Boat!!!

Yup, she saw it. I wasn't in too much trouble since I gave her plenty of warning.. Oddly enough, she is seeing the potential to the project. Talking about the new color for the top (I am thinking a dark blue personally) I think she is leaning towards a red.

I fogged the cylinders and sprayed down the carb last night. Today, I got my ear muffs and then learned the battery was dead. And so begins the project...........

Re: First Boat!!!

i would get real sure about the engine and drive condition as step one as i am sure they need some work which could make or break the project depending on what you find

tommays

Re: First Boat!!!

Thanks Tommay,

The mechanicals are the area I am most comfortable with. My plan for the next week is to check out the full condition of the engine. If good, tune it, winterize it and forget it (well order all new hoses and belts etc... to put on in the spring). I am pulling the outdrive and bringing it to the basement for a thorough review (probably rebuild).

I haven't messed much with fiberglass since High school, I am most nervous about this. My plan is to build new floors over the winter and glass them in place in the spring (and foam)

simply put, it needs a little of everything (some cases a lot). I love the retro look of it and the main hull is very solid in great shape.

Goal is $1000 project (assumming only a few hundred needed for mechanicals)

Regards
e

Re: First Boat!!!

Thanks Tommay, I have already done the search and studied it. Doesn't seem to bad to do. One of those cases where if you go slow and careful, you will have a beautiful deck that will last a long time (well at least another 40 years)I am excited to do the foam, I can only imagine how much more structural the boat will be.

A friend of mine has an all aluminum boat, does the foam stick well to that? I noticed the boat has some shimmy to it after it hits a wave, I would think the foam would tighten that up
