This is my second boat, but the first I/O. 17 1/2' Sea Arrow 1986? I think. Anyway the motor is not currently in it. (Block cracked on old motor, different motor from truck Chevy 305.) The coupling is brand new. Is there anything I can, or should, check before I put the motor in. Not just the motor, anything, drive, cables, wiring, whatever. If the motor and drive check out OK after running I will be back with many other questions. Already read some interesting stuff on covering the seats. Great Forum.

I'd recommend you post your questions in the I/O forum, you'd get a quicker response and probably a better one.

To put the truck engine in the boat you need to marine-ize it.. different gaskets and core plugs, plus you need to make sure your bolt-ons are ignition protected. Car starters, alternators, etc. are no-nos in boats.

To install the sterndrive, you do need an alignment tool.. you can make one on a lathe, cost is about $30-$50 on ebay.
