First Impeller replacement - Tips 25hp outboard , 96

I am putting in a new impeller with the repair kit I purchased from here. My motor is a 1996 Mercury 25hp outboard. I have a subscription to the online manual and it seems pretty easy to do (I am a little savvy if I do say so myself)

Is there anything I need to be cautious of when dropping the lower unit and installing the impeller and gaskets?

Any words of wisdom?

With a good manual it should be a piece of cake

Thanks for the reply. According to my manual -- and please add to this if there is something I am missing -- I need to drop the lower unit, take out the old impeller and gaskets, and reverse the process.

Do I need to put the boat in forward first as suggested by another member? What would be the advantage of this?

does your manual tell you how to unclip the shift shaft?

it shows pictures of the different models from 6-25 hp-- I bought the seloc online manual. Thats seems to be the hardest part (as far as what I can read). I just want to make sure and not screw up my engine. I think it's a one piece shaft but I haven't really been down there to look at it.

I really don't want to pay the marina $75 to install the kit I purchased but at the same time, I don't want to screw it up. The boat is running perfectly right now -- it dribbles/ sputters water at idle, and above that pisses like it ought to (or so I think). It's just that the previous owner got it new in 96, it sat unused for 3 years (he moved to Ecuador) then he started using it. SO, it has teh same impeller it started with. I know he babied it, but I just want to make sure its not going to break on me.

The benefit of putting it in forward when changing the impeller is it will raise the shift shaft making it easier to reconnect later. First time can be tricky but is no big deal. One thing I would say is if the drive shaft does not want to go back in you may have to wiggle the flywheel a little. And be sure to line the water tube up right. Good luck.

The 25 Mariner I had was a 1998 and was the easiest motor I've owned to change impellers on. I have the Seloc manual too so you should be good to go.

Even with the Seloc, where the heck is the shift shaft release thing, I looked at the motor and the pictures on Seloc do not help me at all.

I struggled with this and found it as much by accident as anything but once you know what it is it's really simple. the release mechanisim is kind of like an old fashioned gate hook. The top of the shift rod has a hole in it and the pivot point of the clip goes through the plastic block which is split down the middle to accept the shift rod. About 3/4 of and inch forward of the shift rod its a little protruding plastic ***. by lifting up on that with a flat head screwdriver it will flip up and then the "gate Hook" can be withdrawn and the shift shaft will pull free . Took me half an hour to figure out but it really is a slick way of doing things. Hope this description helps--video or pics wuold make it even more clear. BTW this is on a tiller shift merc 9.9

Thanks Brian,

Again, I will have to peek at it some more to figure this one out. There really isn't much to the actual engine compartment and I am just trying to find anything that looks close to what Seloc and you have described. I'll have to wait until this afternoon to give it another look. Just so happens I live near Springfield (where Tracker is at Bass Pro) maybe the tracker guys can help me with this one on a pro bono kind of q and a. There also is a Tracker manufacturing plant here in the city- they just do hulls though.

Keep the tips coming - I want to have as much info as possible before I dive in there. Will I need any lubricants/silicon when replacing the impeller and gaskets?

Facing the carb, look down and to the right of it..you should see a plastic gizmo. If you have someone spin the prop while you shift from F to N to R you should see it move. Then you have to look at it to figure how to unhook but it's simple.

Thanks, I can't wait to get another look at it. I feel I can do it but at the same time I still don't want to jack something up.

Re: First Impeller replacement - Tips 25hp outboard , 96

Well, I did it. I got everything in there ( and after taking the darn starter off it made a whole lot more sense) and back together and didn't hook the shift shaft back up right , so it wasn's shifting...

Things I noticed- It would sputter water, then a nice stream would come out, then back it off and would sputter,

It seemed kind of spiratic pissing -what did I do wrong? Either way I am taking to the marina tomorrow to have them redo it all- i don't care about the money, I just don't want to ruin my new fishing boat.

When you were seating the impeller into the cup, did you turn the driveshaft clockwise? Are you sure yo got the impeller key in?My 25 wouldn't spit water hard till it warmed up and the thermostat opened. Did you have it in the water or on muffs?

Muffs were on it and after it ran a bit it started spitting a good stream, then sputter kind of back and forth. I did turn it clockwise. The directions said to and the impeller wouldn't fit otherwise.

is it easy enough to remove the t-stat temporarily? Then you can check if you get a good steady pee stream with the knowledge that there is no t-stat that could possibly be buggering you around. You have to put the t-stat back in afterwards ofcourse. But atleast you know then that you did a good job on the impeller.

But I'd guess that the pee take-off is upstream from the t-stat, so it might make no difference at all. Also check your garden hose that it's not getting sucked flat somewhere, and that the tap is wide open.

I know the hose it fine :) when on water comes out from where the prop goes and from around the muffs -- the the hose is no prob. I think I will take it in and have them change the thermostat as well, it's probably a good idea anyway seeing as how the old impeller was about to fall apart.
