First Outings - Questions and Comments

I picked up my new Q5i SF on 6/22, and put her in the water for the first time on 6/28 where it stayed until 7/5. I didn't get an hour meter in as I had planned, but would estimate 15 to 20 hours of actual run time. First impression - What a BLAST!!! But, I do already have some questions that I'm hoping you all may be able to help me out...

1. My impression was that I didn't take on much water. However, I did need to use the bilge a few times. The water that pumped out had a cloudy/white appearance initially, then by the end of the week was sort of just slightly soapy looking. Could this be some sort of release agent used when forming the hull?

2. Slow speed maneuverability was fair to poor. In no wake zones between lakes, it required an awful lot of left & right correction to maintain my weak attempt at a straight course. Normal? Is this one of the issues that trim tabs fixes?

3. Higher speeds, say starting at ~40 mph GPS indicated, I get a good bit of porposing (accompanied by a good bit of hull noise which I found alarming at first). Is that just a learning curve thing where I'll need to figure out what to do with the trim? I hope it is not normal.

4. I had to stand up a lot while driving the thing to comfortably see. I do not have the "Drivers seat w/bolster". Is that option the type of seat where the front part flips back to give the driver more of an upright seating position? Any clue if that is something I could order after the fact, although I would guess that would be big $$$.

5. Any general maintenence/care suggestions would be welcomed. I've never owned this nice of a boat before, and I'd like to keep it like new for as long as possible.

Reviews and general comments on my add-ons...

I got the iPilot for the trolling motor. That thing was fricken awesome. However, the actuators for steering the Minn Kota Powerdrive V2 (not really part of the iPilot addition) were really loud. If you have to steer, I'm thinking you're not going to sneak up on any fish.

I purchased the Prism custom cover from iBoats. I have a 2013 boat, and ordered the 2012 boat's cover (as 2013 wasn't shown as available). Fits like a glove, although the reinforcements for the areas like the boarding ladder are slightly off - but I doubt that has anything to do with the 2013/2012 thing. Trailered for 1200+ miles with the trailer straps, no issues. It seems like a great cover. Probably will add some reinforcement material at the correct spots though.

I got a Lowrance HDS-5 and the Navtronics Hot Maps Platinum for my area. The charting is excellent; however, the fish finder doesn't seem to be anything special. If one of the less costly units does the GPS chart/map thing, I probably should have gone with that. Or, maybe I just need to use it more and learn it's features.

I'm sure there is more I could say - and I definaltely have more questions, but I think this post is already getting too long. So, I'll cut it off here.

Thanks for any input on any of the five questions posed above.

Re: First Outings - Questions and Comments

First, Welcome! I've been here just about a year. Bought our 2012 Q5i last June, towed it 600 miles where it went in the water for its maiden voyage. Sounds like a similar situation for you :)

1) Mine did not have any milky appearance, however it did have a rusty/red coating on a lot of things in the bilge area (on the fiberglass). Wipes up easy with a towel.

2) it sucks to steer these slow. I've read smart/trim taps can help.

3) These boats are light/thin I believe and they also are fairly flat on the bottom. So they bounce hard unless you weigh them down with people. We were on the Chesapeake Bay last week and with 7 full size people on board and the ride was much better through the waves. Trim down will fix the porposing, but also the smart tabs can fix that too I believe.

4) There is an option for the flip seat, I did not get it either, I sit on my knee a lot or just look through the windshield

Suggestions?

From my personal experience get some sort of volt meter on board to monitor the battery (verify its charging). Maybe a fluke, but my orange wire off the alternator broke this year (35-40 hours on boat) and left us stranded.

I got roughly 20-25 hours on mine last year and at the end of the season I just changed the oil, drained the coolant (blue plugs/screw thing on top), put in a full tank of ethanol free gas with some stabil, and plugged the battery into a tender. Started up this spring like it was on the lake the week before.

the end of this season I'll do the lower gear oil along with the engine oil, and fuel filter. I believe it'll be time to pull the stern drive and check/lube it up too.

Hope that helps answer some questions.

Congrats! Just bought my first Tahoe last month but have been around boats most of my life. In response to your comment on the steering challenge at no wake speeds, trim up a bit at it will help.

Yeah in no wake areas it can be a dandy to go straight. Just learn to not steer - just let it wobble and the net result will be straight (assuming you have room, can get interesting in a channel). Also the trimming up all the way seems to help a hair (gets a little bit of the bow out of the water).

Aerospace 303 protectant on the vinyl and occassionally on metal and fiberglass will help protect the shine/color for years to come.
Starbrite Deck Cleaner/protectant on the deck for easy cleanup after a messy outting cleans up easy - and makes it easy to clean later. (works great on outside of hull also for spot treating)
Silicone spray on bunks helps get her on and off a little better (careful, readup about this , don't want boat falling off). Recommend going easy on the spry.

Careful at gas fill up - likes to overflow! :)

That cloudyness is probably a lot of fiberglass dust - i noticed a lot of it when i did some wiring when first got mine (in carpet...and everywhere)

Yes... Whats up with that? You cannot allow it to fill up / stop on its own even if the nozzle is all the way in. Love going to the lake smelling like gas :-/

After a while you will learn about how much fuel you have used and get pretty close. When you think you are close while filling hold your hand over the vent and feel for the air coming out. When this air stops it is time to stop pumping. It will take some practice but I hardly ever spill fuel anymore.

Par for the course for most all boats unfortunately .

i just listen for the sound to change a little bit. Also I don't get caught up with filling her up all the way most of the time - if I have gotten a few gallons in and i think the sound changed a bit (like it might be full)...I stop.

Of course if I was going to be on a trip without access to easy fill... might be different. Good chance my boat would be getting a gas wash down :)

#2 and #3 will be dramatically improved and become a non issue with installing nautilus trim tabs $100-$150 fix ...........#5 if you are like me being observant of fluid levels, noises that arent normal, researching scheduled routine maintenance and becoming familiar with the ins and outs of your boat and how it should perform will put your mind at ease. I was a nervous wreck for weeks with my new boat ..... learn to enjoy it while being aware of taking good care of it.

#1 I have never had any water in the bilge unless it came from rain, dumping the cooler drain and once had a leak coming from the riser elbow where the rubber hose met the metal elbow and was just a matter of tightening the band on the fitting to stop the leak .... probably just missed at the factory ..... leak was between the riser and transom/swim platform wall leaking down the back side. Took me a couple of trips to trace it down ....... but have never had the boat in the water for more than maybe 12hrs at a time and has always been bone dry otherwise. I would start by checking the area in the picture im attaching while the motor is running. I am sure it could be from another other sources but was just mine. Congrats on the new boat.
