Hi,

I just found this forum, as I've been suddenly taken with the idea of purchasing an inflatable boat so that I can take my daughter and occasionally my nephew out on lakes and ponds.

I live in Philly, but go back home to central Illinois every summer, where there are ponds and lakes, as well.

I am sort of stuck on the Intex Excursion 5. I've read reviews at Amazon, Cabela's, and read other feedback here and other places.

I'm thinking I'd get the boat, a rechargeable inflator, the motor mount, a Minn Kota 30 trolling motor, a battery, and a battery case. Looks like it'll run me about $400 - $450, I think.

I'll probably occasionally fish from the boat, but not on any regular basis--more like once or twice a year, at most.

My family had a powerboat growing up, and I used to go out in canoes and rowboats on a pond near our house, and I'd like my daughter to get to have a watercraft experience--plus it just plain seems like it'll be fun.

I'll be sticking all that boating stuff in the back of my Buick Rendezvous, but I think I should have plenty of space (along with all our vacation luggage, etc.).

I'd love to hear any feedback from Excursion owners, Excursion haters, owners of other inflatables, or just any comments you want to make.

Looking forward to learning more about everyone's experiences as I read the forum.

Re: First Post! Howdy!

Hey there!

I own an Intex Mariner, and while it was good the few times I used it last year, it decided to fail to stay inflated this year when I went to fill 'er up for the first time. And all the times after that. I have not even had the damn boat for a year yet. Now i am just one opinion, and its not even the same boat... but I would maybe be somewhat weary of their boats. I am currently looking at some Zodiacs, and I think that is the best way to go for me. For you, depending on how often you use it and how well you treat it that could be the best boat you could ever find (for the time being).

Anyways enough rambling! Rock on and keep on boating!

Hi,

I looked at the Intex and it seems like it is unsupported PVC. It also says on the website that it is impervious to Gasoline and oil which I believe might be wrong.

I would recommend you go with supported PVC material boat and you will have many years of enjoyment from it.

Can you give me an example of what "supported PVC" would be?

Hi,

The PVC material found on a Zodiac or other inflatable. I would suggest that you get a transom at the back which will be more effective than a motor mount at the back of a sot tail. A soft tail is a boat without a transom. Please read this link about unsupported PVC,
