I have acuired a 14' fiberglass hull. I'm not sure how to state it but the bow is covered. Not open. The hull is solid! the floor has some spongie spots but it is salvagebale. My question is there is no tag on this baby so I don't know what it is really. I need to get a motor and I need to know how to size it. Throw me a bone?

Re: First Resto Project HELP!

Well, start by using the search function on the board here for "spongy floor". Probably you have a lot of work to do to make the boat safe :)

As to what it is, you can look for the HIN number, which should be on the outside of the transom, right or left hand side near the top edge. Run that number through any of the free HIN identifier services to find out what the manufacturers' name is. Alternatively post a few good pics here and probably someone can figure out what it is.

If you do nothing else, make sure you check the transom for rot... search here for information on a "tap test", flex testing, or drilling cores. If you put an outboard on a rotten transom at the very least you're heading for an unsafe boating excursion.

So I have removed the old floor. It was rotten. The transom seams to be very solid I will further test it. As for the floatation foam, there is none in the hull what so ever is that a bad thing? I only plan to replace the floor and put on a 15-25 hp motor and a couple of seats and use the boat for fishing.
I'll give it a paint job too.

Re: First Resto Project HELP!

thats fine. i rarely replace foam on a small boat. you only need it if you are sinking.

Re: First Resto Project HELP!

Found out it is a 57 or 58 Lonestar Monterey.
I hooked up with a guy from Canada that has one and he's running a 77Mercury 402. I'm assuming that is 40 HP. I'm new to this.
That guy said the boat was made with no foam.
I will probably put a little in under the deck towards the rear.
I'm looking for a motor if you have any leads I'd appreciate it.
Thanks for the advice, More pics coming!

Re: First Resto Project HELP!

Thanks for the leg work!
I just got another old boat today. A 16' glastron with a 70HP Chrysler outboard that has been rebuilt and run once. I hope to trade for a 20-40HP or sell it to buy what I need. The glastron has all the pieces and parts I need (the chrome stuff) Then I will scrap it and sell the trailer. I might sell the tub too?

I am going to try to lay the deck in the Lonestar this weekend. I will shoot some pics of my progress. Again thanks for the tips and the site links. I'll post some pics of the 16 footer too. I may resto that one as well what the heck I don't need a life anyway!

Tim:
Screwed. Yep.

John:

I'm not sure of the model yet. I'll have more details later. I think the windshield is one continuous piece. This baby is old.

Re: First Resto Project HELP!

Check out the Chapter/Club page at the AOMCI website (www.aomci.org) and see if there is a club near you with a swap meet planned...the spring thaw is coming, good place to shop motors and meet new buds.
