72 25 hp Evinrude, bought a thermostat and impeller kit. Found the thermostat location fine, not too sure about the impeller situation..? What will I run into? Any tricks to make it succussfull?

Something caused the points to get so hot the spring lost its ability to close the points at all... I am thinking its a cooling issue...?

Any info appreciated!

Ain't no way the cooling system got so hot so as to burn the points spring. That's impossible.

What do you have connected to the stop wires? Do you have an automotive ignition switch in there? That will melt the ignition.

Its the correct marine ignition for this type of boat/engine. I cant imagine what would heat the spring like that, nothing else had visible heat damage except the one breaker points spring??

Before you drop the lower unit, you'll have to disconnect the shift rod. The shift rod connection point is usually under the carbs somewhere, although I'm not familiar with your specific motor. Once you have the lower until out, do not adjust the shift rod (it is threaded into the lower unit). Adjusting the rod length may screw up your shifting after reassembly.

When attempting to put the new impeller into the housing, use a little dish soap as a lubicant. Really helps to get the impeller in place and just washes out once the motor is used.

Good luck!
