Took out my new(used) bass boat out today for a trial run. Its a `87 Cajun 16` with a `75 135HP Johnson.

I quess my question is, is there a proper way to use the tilt and trim? I noticed in the no wake zone at idle speed the engine kept bogging sorta, then I trimed the engine up and it smoothed right out. Once I left the no wake zone I started to give it throttle and I wasnt sure were to place the engine (trim). I lowered the engine I quess half way down and gave it full throttle and it seemed it took 15-20 seconds before it started to come up to plane. Once it planed that sucker REALLY took off. Cought me and the wife by surprise. Then I noticed when I came back down to idle speed, the engine acted like it was struggling, so I trimed the engine way up and it smoothed out again. Is this the way it works??

I always thought the tilt and trim was to lower and raise the engine while launching and trolling in shallow water.

any advice??

BTW,
I was near a shore line testing out the trolling motor.(works fine). Then off in the distance I hear this loud rumbling....around the bend came a guy in what looked to be a 30` duel engine spped boat. (like what you see on Miami Vice.) This guy came within 50` of us (motor off and still) . I thought he was going to hit us. Scare the **** out of the wife. Then a few min. later, here he come again, but a smaller craft pulling a tube with kids in it was coming the other way. This guy came within 25-30 feet for thier boat......

what a dangerous Jack-***...

This is what a marine radio is great for. If you see someone endangering others, report them to the authorities before they get a chance to kill someone and ruin a bunch of people's lives.

As for the trim, I am unsure of this. Not even sure if my engine has a trim on it.

it sounds like your motor may need a little maintainance. besides that the trim is used this way. when getting out of the hole,(taking off) the motor should be all the way down. then as you get some speed, you start to trim up some. you have to keep the prop and lower unit in the water at all times when running, or it will loose the water pick up, to cool the motor. it is sort of an experiment as each boat is different. that motor should immediately put that boat on plane.

i hope your life jackets have drag chutes on them....:D

do a search...on this forum....there is detailed threads on how to use the trim.....if used correctly the trim will save you gas and get some more top end out of it......

as td said....start with it down low....when on plane.....trim up....just a tap each time...till the bow starts to porpus....then your too high....back it down till it sits flat.....

as the trim is raised you will hear the rpm increase and the boat will speed up a little bit.......

what you are doing...is adjusting the angle of the motor relitive to the hull and water
