I have a 1973 delata tri hul, with a 140hp merc i/0 pre alpha. I just noticed "luckily before i went to the lake" that my prop seal is leaking. I have read the merc. manual and it is not to particular on repair of the prop seal. I know I have to remove the main nut with a special tool, but can i just use a drift and a hammer. Also can i just use a slide hammer with a tree jaw to pull out the gear after i remove the nut. Lastly after I have the unit out of the lower foot then what do i do? I have never really done any internal out drive repair, only water pumps and what not, but I'm very competent. Any help?

You need the special tool for the carrier nut, a puller for the carrier assembly, the merc manual from the Adults Only section. There used to be a tool that looked like a piece of pipe the slipped over the shaft and had a threaded end to screw under the prop seals and remove them.

I know i need a puller when i get it out, but can't i just use a drift and a hammer to remove the main nut that holds the carrier in place?

Using a hammer and drift will most likely break the ears off. it can be drilled and removed then replaced. if its corroded badly that may be your only option. also dont be afraid to use heat. that old stlye bearing carrier may not have the pulling pads cast in so you have to pull on the outside ring. and if corroded it will break.use heat and penetrating oil. and be patient. good luck Bill
