Ok I am in to repairing this motor. I have never worked on a lower unit. I did some reading on these vintage motors. I am looking for any tips on replacing the parts I just ordered. The repair kit will be here later this week.

Got parts today for Impeller repair. I will be pulling motor off the boat to do repair. The parts looked like all the info i have been able to find on this repair. There is one part in the bag I am not sure where it may go? It is a small round pin the best I can tell. Anybody know where This part might go. Am i missing something on the parts list that I have.

No need to pull the engine off of the boat to replace the water pump, in fact with the engine mounted to the transom it will hold every thing for you. Just drop the lower unit and replace the pump. I am thinking the pin you are talking about is the pin that drives the impeller, it goes into a small hole inthe drive shaft and mates to a slot in the impeller.

Ok so leave motor on the boat. It can get a little bouncy on the lake with waves from PWC. I may be a little more comfortible with the motor being on somthing solid while I work on it. I was working on an electrical issue last weekend and It was not the smoothest working area.

And don't stress over it, you'll be fine. I worried just as much when I did my 1st one until I found out it was a piece of cake. Take your time and be thorough and all will be fine. Good time to change out the fluid too, btw.

Sorry, I didn't realise the boat was still in the water, yes by all means remove the engine to replace the water pump.

Been there, done that, not fun. A magnet on a long piece of strong spring will help you out, sometimes.

Tommorrow is D-day I either get this motor running or I will be looking for a new motor. Changing the impeller and parts along with a new solenoid and this baby better fire up and run or its off to the Boat Motor Graveyard.

Ok I worked on the Johnson today removed lower unit and replaced Impeller. It was toast in lots of pieces as I expected. It was a little trickey getting the LU back on but my brother was a great help. I don't think one person could do it by himself?
Replaced solenoid and made all new connections. Boom it started adjusted idle at dock.
Took it out on the water NO high speed throttle.bummer. So on the way back to the dock I remembered reading somewhere that someone had this problen too. I left motor idleing at the dock and pulled the top plug wire off and the Motor died .Restarted motor with plug wire back on and then pulled bottom plug wire motor kept running as nothing had happened. A lot of fuel was in the water at the dock when I turned motor off is that from the the plug not firing?
Now do I pull the flywheel and test coils and what else. My thoughts are when I started this I checked the plug wires thought I had good spark, When the motor was runiing It must of got very hot and maybe damaged the coils and what else? I know I am close to having this Baby running tip top.
Any help and tips I will gladly accept.

Pull the plugs and check the compression... Hopefully it is just a bad coil...
