Pulled the drive as usual and for the first time found water. There wasn't much but enough and the issue was caused by the boot sleeve.
This spring when installing the drive it was a bit harder then normal, and I chalked it up to getting older. It wore me out just sliding it in place. So this summer I bought a yardarm stern jack for next time.
I didn't notice the sleeve had moved out or could be I caused it having such a hard time. The sleeve wasn't damaged, but the bottom of the boot had moved out of position slightly, so it wasn't seeing correctly. Bearing feels good but can hear some slight noise so that's getting replaced since its a sealed bearing. Sure wish it had a grease fitting, but so it goes
