Hello
I am new to forums, please look over any mistakes. I have a 1983 model 70 hp Mercury outboard. 3 cylinder. The top piston has the rings seized in the grooves. It looks like the piston skirt rubbed enough of itself on the cylinder wall to jam the rings. I do not think the motor ran hot. The motor is in almost new condition and was stored a long time. I can fix it but do not want this to happen again any advice would be appreciated.

Re: First Time

On any engine rebuild or overhaul the w/pump impeller should be changed-carbs and fuel pump cleaned and checked along with the max. timing and RPM. It's just go to know that you have covered all the bases.

Re: First Time

You will also want to hone out the cylinder walls so that the new rings will set right, and not do exactly what has already been done again....
