heres how the days events went
1.lauched boat starts right up ideles no problem go park truck and trailer
2.let idle at dock sounds great put in gear take off no problems
3.run about 1/2 throttle for 5-7 min.smooth as can be running
4.run her about 3/4 throttle for 10 min.still smooth as can be
5.bring her back down to idle let her run for 5 min. just kinda checkin the boat over. engine just dies.
6.try to restart cranks fine but has hard time starting like its flooded.finally starts raise the fast idle lever idle goes up a little for about 10 seconds then it revs up like crazy.sounds like it cleared itself out.
7.lower idle back down put in gear still idiling fine but try to give it some throttle just dies.
8.repeat step 6,7 about 5 times really have to play with throttle feathering it but finally takes off and runs perfect
9.repeat steps 6,7,8 everytime we shut it off
now i put new fuel tank, primer bulb, fuel lines, spark plugs, fuel filter.all before we put in water, and fresh gas. pulled carbs back off tonight when we got home and look perfect all jets open no debris in bowls all three look clean as can be.
just got me stumped as this is the first outboard i have ever owned always had i/os and jet boats.

Suggest you have a moderator move your post to the merc / mariner section as this is not exclusively a toon issue and that's where the techies hang out.

Do you have one of those portable plastic fuel tanks? If so, is the vent valve open?

You should also replace the fuel pump. The carbs could still be the problem if the gaskets are deteriorated or the floats are leaking. I would competely rebuild them if for no other reason than peice of mind.

pulled fuel pump off took it apart totally sludged up on (in) side of pump gaskets on inside of pump are like swelled up look kinda funky one piece is round and aboutthe size of a nickle and it covers 4 holes the rubber was actually sucked into these holes and kinda folded.will replace pump but just kinda confused on why it would run so good when underway but be hard starting.think if pump was bad it would not run under power?

Would not pump fuel at low speeds.

All mechanically driven fuel pumps delivers little fuel at low RPM's. If the diapham leaks then at higher R's, less leakage will occur.

so rebuilt fuel pump today got all back together,as im pumping fuel bulb its starts leaking at the conection where you hook the line to the enginge.looked at the transom and appears to be a stain under the connection on the inside of the wood on transom.if this connection was leaking could this be the cause of my hard start after shutdown problem? looks like o-ring in front of check ball may be defective.

Any leak in the fuel lines means it is not only leaking fuel but leaking air and therefore causing a lean condition. Fix it or you will be looking at an engine overhaul.

Yes, if you don't see smoke from the older 2-strokes, you got a problem. And as Silvertip says, run the engine too lean and it's time for an overhaul. And it doesn't take long; as in minutes......

A two stroke plug will usually be black compared to a gray color from the old V8's.
Over the years, I've tried cleaning a couple of fouled two-stoke plugs with little luck. I recommend changing them yearly.

Make sure that you KNOW every inch of fuel line is OK for ethanol gas, I have seen the ethanol dissolve the insides of line on older 1980's and 90's boats. I cleaned carbs on a co-workers boat three times until we figured out it was a 18 inch piece of old line running from the tank to the deck fitting that was dissolving into small fragments and clogging the carbs right back up. I also have a fuel filter right at the intake of my pump so I know the fuel going into the pump and then the carbs is debris free.

I am running the Pennzoil TCW-3 synthetic blend oil from Wally-world at 50:1 and I am getting very little smoke, almost none, on my 35 year old motor.

Fuel pumps are very easy to rebuild and the non rubber parts almost never wear out, I just rebuilt mine with a $17 sierra kit in about 45 minutes.
