 We as fishing guys and girls talk so much about the toys we have to catch a fish say 12" and up.
We plan how to get there we also talk about how to fish the new area but not seeing that in too many forums. If you could share this information as to how you fish a new area and why you do what you do.This could include the location you fished and what you learned about that location. I think would be intresting informative.

:D I'm 62, just got my first boat... 1965 15' Starcraft still working out the bugs in 1966 40hp Evenrude.

This is direction will take looking for a place to fish.Go to internet look for sites near by (conservation departments have good information)than I'm using Google Earth to zoom in on that river and lake to get a feel for the traine, Print them out making sure North and South are on each picture. I now know where to put in what is around me and direction might go.The rest I have not done for working out bugs in my new old boat.
You can help me gaine insite into the art of fishing so when ready to go will know how to catch a fish.Oh I do have a pole and tackle box.

MICHAEL

The naxt step is to hang out in bait shops (if any) in the area, Mike. Talk to successful local fishers and the bait shop operators.

Then either hire a guide for a day or see if one of the locals will take you along for bait and gas.

Good luck. :)

Re: FISH A NEW AREA WHAT IS YOU PLAN attack

i do it many different ways depends on time of year, the lake or river itself and what fish im targeting.mosy of the time i still go with gut feelings and the way i like to fish, for example went tp tn river saturday started off in the back of creeks fishing grass its fall cooler weather the fish should be moving back, but a cold front came threw what to do, well i went to the back of creek started throwing frogs and buzzbait nothing switched to a fluke nothing worked my way to the mouth and the points nothing then got on the river channel itself throwing a 10"worm starte catching fish, everdays different and ever lake, just go fishing and have a good time.

Re: FISH A NEW AREA WHAT IS YOU PLAN attack

welcome to boating, Michael!

I always get a map of the lake, and usually I'll look at the aerial photos on terraserver.

But what helps me most is a local fishing forum we have here texasfishingforum.com - cuts down a lot on my search time. If you could find a local equivalent you'd have it made.

There's no substitute for personal knowlege, though - if you manage to meet someone who knows the water, invite 'em along, I'm always up for a fishing trip in somebody else's boat. ;)

I enjoy fishing a new lake ever now & then, but without some advance intelligence I feel like I'm just wasting my time.

Look for habitat - if I'm after largemouth bass I'm looking for hydrilla or standing timber (it's easier to spot than submerged timber, but maps are helpful for that) in coves or windblown points. Warmer water, boat docks, that sort of thing. If it's white bass or stripers look for humps & long points surrounded by deeper water and start on the windward side.

Have fun and post your results!

Basically, I just drive around at idle until something I see something that I like on my fishfinder. Whether it be a lonely stump in a flats area, a big school of bait fish, creek channel, whatever. Look at the bottom of the lake, and then look for a feature that stands out. Invest in a good fishfinder. I have a Eagle FishMark 480 that I paid $199 and the detail is unparalleled.

Think baby steps and start with smaller bodies of water. If you have easy access to a large body of water find a ramp that has access to a nice cove or two and fish them exclusively a few times. Enjoy!

Where will you be fishing and what are you fishing for? Maybe I can help since I'm so close to you.

Carl DiSalvo at Bismark is OK. Very shallow ramp. The lake usually chokes up pretty badly with Hydrilla weed growth and by Mid May you've got to cut though a couple hundred yards of weeds to get to open water. Lot's of Lily Pad beds there. LM bass fishing is OK. Not a lot of big fish. Don't know about the bluegill or crappie. I've heard the catfishing there is pretty good.

Big river at Browns Ford is really meant for canoing. You might be able to get a small john boat in there with a jet-drive. That's part of the restricted area of the river with a 18" length limit on smallmouth. Fishing is pretty good I've heard.

Never been to Ben Branch.

I'm surprised you're putting in at George Winter as low as the rivers been. IIRC, the ramp on the STL county side has a hole in the middle of the ramp deep enough to launch but as soon as you back the boat away from the trailer you wind up churning mud and sand. The ramp on the Jefferson county side is OK to launch off of in low water, when they open it, but it's a beetch to put the boat back on. The concrete drops off into big chunk rock and I nearly lost a wheel there a few years back. I used to launch occasionally at the marina but the $5 launch fee seemed steep and when the river is as low as it's been, the channel from the marina to the river is barely wide enough for a boat and only around 6 - 12" deep.

A couple lakes I'd suggest.

Perry County lake by Perryville. Good LM bass fishing, crappie and bluegill. Lake is very hot and cold. When the fish are biting it's good, when they're not, it's bad.

Washington County lake in ILL south of Nashville. Used to be a really good Big bass lake. Not quite as good but still some pretty good fishing. Good for catfish too.

Rend Lake in Illinois. Fair for all species though it can get rough fast.

Little Dixie, 10 miles east of Columbia and just a few miles south of I-70. Pretty fair fishing for all species.

Good luck with your boat.

Robertson State Park has a ramp that is usually o.k. for prop motors. You should be able to make it up to the mouth of the Burbouse. I recently got a 1754 w/75 hp--been working bugs out at Cuiver Island MDC ramp but water level can be iffy.
