I have a garmin 54cv and a standard horizon gx1600. I want to get link the two using NMEA 0183.

does this seem right do I hook brown to brown, blue to blue and the two left over wires from the vhf green and grey to the ground? When I say ground I would hook them to the black terminal on my fuse box right ?

then what do I do in the gos to enable the exchange of info?

sorry for the stupid questions I am new to boating

Welcome to iBoats! :welcome:

Unfortunately, wire colors aren't standardized across brands. I ran into this question on a boat I inspected today. You will have to look in the manuals for the two units to find what gets connected to what. The colors may match or they may not. Input + from one to output + on the other, ground to ground.

Assuming you don’t need bi-directional communications

GPS data from plotter to radio:
Plotter Blue to Radio Blue

DSC data from radio to plotter:
Plotter Brown to Radio Gray

Common data ground:
Plotter Black to Radio Green

I got that I think the confusion is that The green wire that goes to the ground might be not hooked up right, when you say hook Green and Brown to ground It needs to be hooked to any black terminal in order to work? Because I think what might have happened is the person took their old gps out so maybe hooked somewhere that is no longer connected. What do you think?

Sorry this is first boat and I am not mechanically inclined

The GRN / BLK connection needs to be grounded to chassis.

In theory the two units should be grounded to each other thru the power connection but that is rarely the case. I typically tie the two line together then run a third wire to tie the connection back into a chassis ground (power connection)

Can I hook the green wire to terminal on my fuse block with black connectors or does it need to go to the gps black wire? Is any ground acceptable ?

GRN and BLK wires need to be connected together then grounded to a common point

Ok so will put both wires in a nut and a wire to the fuse block got it ...

You're not wiring a lamp post..... I highly recommend something other than wire nuts to connect the wires. Scotchloks are an easy, viable solution
