I'm a little confused with a fish finder combo with GPS and sonar vs Fish finder with Depth speed and temperture. Is it better to have the GPS separate from the fishfinder? Does anyone know of a good color system $500.00 dollars and under?

Thanks,

Re: Fish finder combo vs Fish finder

I prefer seperate units, key-z.

I use a Garmin 276C GPS because I can use it in my vehicle, hiking and in the boat. It is expensive because of the car navigation feature, but if I wanted GPS only for the boat it would probably be a Garmin 76C.

For SONAR I prefer Lowrance/Eagle. I currently use an Eagle Cuda 168 because of limited console space.

I am happy with both units for my freshwater use.

I have limited space so I opted for a combined unit. I bought the Lowrance 337 and I am very happy with it so far.

Its best feature was being able to add a NMEA 2000 fuel flow sender so that my GPS reports my MPG and gallons of fuel used.

Mostly personal preference. If you have the room and funds then I like seperated units. Also how you ar going to use the unit makes a big difference. Your eye sight is another factor.

Fishing shallow water under 50 feet then you do not need a lot of power or high resolution. Fishing deep or saltwater then power and resolution is a must.

With good eyes for shallow water take a look at the Lowrance M68C color unit for List of $419. Screen size is 3.5 inch but has GPS with a great base map and sonar.

For a larger color screen and a little more power check out the Eagle FishElite 500C with a 5 inch screen for a list of $549.

Keep in mine that unit last a very long time if you take good care of them. My 1981 unit as good as the day I bought it.

Thanks for all your knowledge guys. I'm still looking and I find I'm a little less confused than before I started this search for a good reasonable unit. I keep getting stuck on GPS Chart plotter verses GPS Sonar. Would love to have it all because I fish and dive in the Florida Keys most weekends.

Thanks again,
