I am going to buy a fish finder but not sure what to get. This is where you folks come in. When I look at fish finders I see some with 4000 watts, some down to 800. If I am fishing only in inland lakes that only go down to maybe 200 ft. does it matter how much power these units have? I see units that have 240 pixels and some with 480 vertical pixels. Would 320 be plenty? Am wanting to spend around $200.00 maybe a little more or a little less for a good unit. Am looking at Garmin, Eagle and Bottom Line. Please tell me what you think.

Re: fish finder questions

redog
I would get the best I could afford. The more pixels, the sharper and more distinct the display. Comparing a 140-160 pixel unit to 320-480 pixel is like comparing '80's era pac-man to the graphics in the Matrix Trilogy. It's a lot easier to interpret what you're seeing on the screen. High wattage gives you a stronger signal/return. High wattage and resoloution can show you fish that are only a couple inches off the bottom whereas with a lower end unit the fish would only appear as a blob or hump.
JD

Redog,

Check this out. Lowrance Demos. You can download the fish finder you like to your computer and can play around with it. The Lowrance website is outstanding, it gives you everything you need to know about sonar and gps. I owned a Eagle 7200, Eagle Magna and a Garmin 160 fishfinder. Both Eagle units had to be sent back for repairs and I decided after the 2nd one broke I would try something different so I bought a Garmin.I like my Garmin but I've always wanted a Lowrance so my next one will be the X135.Just a little side note, did you ever notice what pro anglers use on their boats? Almost everyone uses Lowrance units. Also try out the sonar/gps units. They're quite amazing. Good luck

Re: fish finder questions

Thanks for the answers. I think I will go with the eagle fishmark 480. I downloaded the emulator and have been playing around with it and really like it. Looks like it will do everything I need a fishfinder for. Good resolution, plenty of power for fairly shallow water and from what I have read on here a very reliable unit.
Thanks

redog,

Look at the Eagle 480DF. It comes with dual frequency and a speed sensor and can be found for around $220.

Good luck.

Yes the 480DF does look like a good deal. Might have to reevaluate my decision. Thanks.
