Re: fish finder

Is this new right out of the box, or did you purchase it used? I seem to have a sister to it installed in my boat, and have asked this same question, but never got a good answer. Some think it maybe a double echo, and the Humminbird rep thought I may be running it in the simulation mode. (I wasn't)
This particular fishfinder was on the boat when I purchased it, so I don't have the history of the fishfinder. It is a older Humminbird Wide View, so I am going to wait until funds become available and replace it with a new color fishfinder. Sorry....I am no help.

Re: fish finder

What speed were you running at? Where is the transducer mounted?

Turbulence from anything else mounted on the transom (or mounted to close to the drive) will give false readings under certain operating conditions. I know when I'm in reverse I can't get any kind of read with mine. Your transducer might just be experiencing some kind of turbulence.

Re: fish finder

Make sure the transducer is pointed straight down, and then while drifting lower the sensitivity to see if you get a good bottom lock. If everything is good but you have problems once you start moving, getting on plane, or at high speed, you have turbulance problems. You will have to experiement with other transom locations.

Re: fish finder

Transducer is not angled correctly. It must be straight down when the boat is setting in the water. It's best to adjust it to the correct angle when the boat is in the water floating.

Re: fish finder

Hi, does anybody have a picture of the correct angle of a transducer? I have one on my boat that I got used and looking at the pdf for installation instructions it appears that the transducer is pointing behind the boat. That is, parallel with the boat. Unless the flat side is not where it points from? I am confused??

Here is the link to the pdf http://www.humminbird.com/pdf/transducer_faq/TransomInstall.pdf

Re: fish finder

The rounded part goes toward the back of the boat FWD and the flat side goes toward the lake away from the boat. It should be about even and level with the bottom of the boat when it's sitting in the water. If it tilted either way it will not read the depth correctly. It will shoot forward under the boat or backwards. The PDF page said only hand tighten until you get the Transducer at the correct angle. Then tighten gently. Imagine the transducer shoots an Ice Cream cone upside down.

OK, thanks. I thought the flat side was supposed to point down. No wonder my readings were super crazy :p I'll try it pointed the other way this next trip and see what happens :)

Re: fish finder

It is suppose to be level with the bottom of the boat. The flat part of the Transducer goes toward the back and the rounded part towards the back of the boat. If you blow up the PDF file you sent you can see the transducer
and where it should be mounted. Look at other boats with the transducers already on. Oh and don't mount it directly behind a strake as this will cause turbulance when the boat is underway.

Mine has a setting for keel depth. I've also noticed that when I run in muddy water the transducer has to be cleaned but it's never been off by that much. I'd suspect the mounting location(wrong angle or cavitation from keel ribs)
