Hi, suddenly the engine stopped. It will not start anymore. I checked the petrol tube, that was clean, petrol pump is working, petrol filter is clean, spark plugs are clean but after several tries to get the engine started the plugs are still dry so I think the carburator is dirty. Can I remove the carburator without problem and do I need new parts when I replace it?
thanks, Rob

i have same motor althoug mine is 1972

before you start removing parts, check your compression and check your spark

a dirty carb will make a motor run bad, and loss of spark is a more likely culprit to make a motor stop altogether

check these things and let us know

m ike

Removing the carburetor is easy.
You should reassemble your carburetor with a new 'carb kit'. This will include new gaskets, a new needle and seat, packing, etcetera.

You can get an OEM one from your local Johnson/Evinrude dealer, or here, #439071
Or you can get an Aftermarket (not made by OMC) one from Iboats, 18-7043, here.

The Aftermarket one does not include a float, and if you have an old cork float, you should replace it. They get full of petrol and sink.

Also, you can test your fuel system by putting some petrol/oil mix in a spray bottle and spraying a some down the carburetors throat. If it will then start, you have a fuel delivery problem (carburetor or fuel primer).

I hope this helps!
