Dive teams are searching the Osage River after a local fisherman makes an unusual find. KRCG's Mallory McGowin was at the Mari-Osa-Delta River Access Monday and explains why authorities are looking for a human body.
This search began after a local fisherman called authorities saying he saw something other than fish in the Osage River.
"We got a call around 1 o'clock from a fisherman who was anchored out fishing. When he tried to pull his anchor up to move to a different spot, he observed what appeared to be a human hand wrapped in his anchor line. Out of surprise, he dropped the anchor line and when he pulled it back in again, the hand was gone," says Missouri Water Patrol Lt. Nick Humphrey.
The man said there was so much weight pulling on his boat the first time he lifted the anchor line, he believed an entire body might be underwater. The Water Patrol says they have no reason to question the fisherman's story.
Officers from several local law enforcement agencies, including the Missouri Water Patrol, the Missouri Highway Patrol, the Cole County Sheriff's Department, the Osage County Sheriff's Department, the Missouri Conservation Department, and local volunteer firefighters have been at the river access point all day Monday.
Four members of the Water Patrol's dive team arrived around 6 p.m., planning to use sonar equipment to help their search. At 8 pm, divers were still operating on top of the water and had not made a dive.
There are two conditions that could make this dive difficult for the team. First of all, the high water level. Second, the lack of visibility in this water. Lt. Humphrey tells me that after the first three or four feet, the water is virtually pitch black and forces the divers to rely on their sense of touch.
The dive team plans to work into the night Monday.
