i'll keep a long story short, new boat, came dangerously close to rocks quite a way off shore (lake erie), need a fishfinder. i don't need color or gps options, just a dependable and accurate unit. any feedback appreciated.

Lake Erie's maximum depth is only around 200' so you don't need a dual-frequency transducer or a particularly high-powered fishfinder.

If all you want is a basic unit you could pick up an Eagle Cuda 168, or if you want something with more power and bigger screen with better resolution an Eagle FishMark320/Lowrance X96 (whichever you can find which is cheaper) is worth a good look.

Edited to note that I would stay away from Hummingbird units.

If you win the lottery, the above link provides another option to keep off the rocks.

I have confidence in anything in the eagle or lowrance line-up. Might be better units out there but that's my experience.

I just got a Cuda-242, has few more pixels than the 168.
Actually, I believe it will end up replacing the 168. Will finally get to try it out on Thursday... weather willing.

BTW Ratracer... average depth of Lake Erie is between 20-50 ft in the western and central basin... deeper in the eastern basin, but I don't think it comes anywhere near 200 feet.

Franger, I am assumming you got into one of the reefs over here in the western side??

I mentioned the 168 specifically because I've seen it for sale recently for only $70, I think you're probably right about the 242 being the eventual replacement. I think you'll be very happy with it. 8)

btw maximum depth of Lake Erie is 210', in the eastern basin
