fishfinder electrical question.... Humminbird(s)

My current used boat came with a older Pirhana (by humminbird) FF. When it works, it is OK for my use. However, after I turn it on, it soon dies of its own accord. Most of the time, the first episode lasts a few minutes, and then the dying times get shorter and shorter. Sounds like an over-heating component.

I am ready to replace it with a similar low-cost simple unit. My question is this....If I have an old Humminbird 300s around...OR...if I simply buy a newer Humminbird unit, can I just use the present wiring and t'ducer?

Today, I had an old Humminbird 200s here which crapped out some years ago..I tried the wiring connections and they fit perfectly. Alas, the 200 had already died...so, other than confirming the wiring connection similarity..it won't help me. I may, or may not, have a 300s in a box someplace.

I am, obviously, trying to keep from re-running the wiring. Anyone done this swap? I know i can call the company...but...would rather hear it from a fellow boater/.fisherman. thanks Rich

if its the same make and the plugs match you are ok .clearly the only critical thing is the + and - supply the right way. You can cut sounder wires ..on simple ones its just co ax but if it has temp sensor ect you will have more cables ...Sounds like the screen has gone on the bad one..I had one similar ...cut the case all around to open it up and without doing anything it works perfect !!!! So that does not help your really !!

It depends on what unit you are going to. As stated, most power cords are the same. The transducer plug can be a two pin or a 7 pin (some pins not used). HB does sell converter cables, 7 to 2, and 2 to 7. If you are using the tilt/swivel mount, there are some other changes over the years, they may prevent swapping. A $7 connector block can fix some of these. A 300TX uses a 3 beam transducer via the 7pin connector. I think your Pirhana uses the 2 pin. Splicing wires and shields can be an "iffy" solution. If you are successful, you still can end up with more noise. Running a new transducer or using a converter cable would be my preference.

And the good news is that I found my old MinnKota 100. Plugged it in and it worked fine. Haven't had it to the
water yet, but I'm betting I have a winner here. Returned the "replacement" FF unopened. thanks for the help and advice here. Rich
