Re: fishfinder/GPS combo

TD, I think the biggest thing in the combos is the GPS charting/mapping qualities. The lower end units have lower end features (of course)

I have a Humminbird 383c. I love the color display and I find the fishfinder is accurate (dual beam) and works great (better than anything I've had before)

The GPS lets me mark waypoints (read, great fishing spots) maps my track, etc. However, depending on your GPS needs, this may or may not work for you.

I paid $399 at Costco in Canada, so I suspect you'd be in the $299 range in the US.

However, in fairness, i don't use the GPS much more than speed and marking waypoints but it seems to have a decent set of features included for the price.

I bought a Humminbird 757C for about $360 at West Marine which did a price match for Amazon who had it at about $370. I replaced my 727 which didn't have chart capability. I haven't had the need for the Navionics card yet. I was able to use my old dual beam transducer from the 727 and the existing bracket and wiring. Basically I just snapped in the unit and was ready to go. I think the built in charts are pretty good but I haven't used it outside the St. John's river yet. The color screen is pretty readable in the daytime. :D

I also have a Humminbird 383c, and I love it. The depth finder works great, and the transducer is not the one that makes that crazy rooster tail everyone complains about.

The only thing I'm not thrilled about, is the mapping is a little offset. It puts me driving across land when I zoom in close. There is an adjustment for it, but it still could be a bit better. For the price, I think it's great though.

The lowest I found them for was $399 retail, but I got a deal on 2 display units, mine and I have an extra. Ebay has them for about $350 or so.
