Fishfinder issue

I've got a lowrance global map 2000 that's having a strange issue. When the boat is on the trailer in my driveway, the unit wont turn on at all. As soon as I put the boat in the water, the unit comes on, but won't really stay on for long. Seems like some type of short, but I just cant figure out why it only comes on with the boat in the water...
Any ideas?

Is the battery fully charged and are the battery and power connections clean and tight?
