I'm a newbie and I'm thinking of buying a fishfinder. I'd like to get one with GPS, down imaging and I don't want a thru-hull transducer. Can anybody suggest a good model. This website shows that Humminbird 597ci HD DI is the best. Are there any good models out there that cheaper than that?

Re: Fishfinder question

Welcome to iboats cesta.

Cheap and sounder/GPS will never be found in the same sentence and the thru hull is an option on almost all of them with the transom mounted transducer standard.

I have a Garmin 172c, current model is 400 something, color sounder/GPS and love it to death, I catfish so I use the fishfinder part mostly for depth but the GPS is invaulable as I night fish too adn it makes it alot easier to find the launch in the dark.

Maybe poke around on Ebay to find one that is more affardable but I think really any brand will do whatever you want it too and 100 things you will never even use, mine tracks top speed, mileage, avg speed, time moving and stopped and total time and has tide charts, moon phase, water temp and temp over time ect ect.

The interface is really intuative also, I read the book that came with it but it is really easy to use considering what all it does, I can only give you my experience with Garmin and I would highly reccomend them.

My personal preference would be Garmin, Lowrance/Eagle then Humminbird, i had one of thier lower line finders years ago and didn't like it but that is just me.

I have the 597 and like it. Find the screen small at times but it works. THe GPS on the unit works well for one that is built in. Went to camp at night and followed the screen all the way.

Re: Fishfinder question

I am not sure all the GPS data is entered correctly.

I use a paper map and a candle for fog & dark nights.
