I have a Eagle 320 and it seems that it scrolls at the same speed whether stopped or while moving. If I was stopped, shouldn't it slow down or freeze showing what's directly under me?

I would also like to know what range it covers? Is it covering a 10x10 foot patter directly under the boat or what size area it covers? Sometimes it makes you wonder where exactly the structure on the bottom is that you see on the graph relative to where you are in the boat.

Hi, Mike.

The FF has no way to know whether the boat is moving or not, or how fast it is going. It just scrolls at the speed you program into it.

Different transducers transmit cones of different angles. Some 5*, some 20*. The area covered on the bottom depends on the cone angle and the depth.

Good luck. :)

I was going to suggest you use A-scope mode on it to see what's directly under the boat, but after looking at the product documentation for this model, it doesn't have this feature.

On my Raytheon, I split the screen so that one side shows scrolling and the other shows the A-scope. A-scope is real time display of the sonar cone and is great when your looking for bait schools or want to see what's in the entire water column under the boat at any given time.

The scrolling display can still be valuable while at anchor, it's just that your not seeing things in real time. When you see a fish on the scrolling display, it's probably already passed.

Stuart

Fish finder always show what is under the boat in the righ most pixel of your display. As far as scrolling speed you set it where you want it and can change it at any time.

Mine says that in general divide the depth of the water by 3 and this is the size of circle your depth finder is viewing. i.e. 15ft of water / 3 = 5 foot circle on bottom.

yeah, like boatist says, I keep having to remind myself, only the column of pixels on the far right hand of the screen is under you right now; everthing to left of that is what was under you at the time. The ff takes all the signal returns from inside the cone and smashes them together into a single column which it draws on the display. So you don't really know where an object is (ahead, behind, left or right), just that it's somewhere under your boat. Or, rather, under the transducer. A fish that spends enough time under the transducer will draw a line all the way across the screen.
