Our Minn Kota PowerDrive V2 has a built-in transducer and wiring to hook up a separate sonar unit. I'm curious how much current the new sonar would draw from the two 12-volt battery system used to power the trolling motor, or is it anything I should even be concerned about?

Re: Fishfinder using transducer on trolling motor

To answer your question it won't. You have to power the sonar through it's own power source and the connection to your trolling motor is to power/transmission for the transducer and signal for water temp. (4 pins)
Just be careful and try to power your unit from another battery than the trolling motor battery..i.e. cranking battery due to the fact you'll get interference if you use the same battery. Minn Kota has what they call a " choker" which will isolate some noise if you absolutely have to use the same batteries, but it does not solve all of the problem. I have the Terrova unit with iPilot and had to have all these questions answered so I had to deal with tech support and now everything works great.
The interconnect is misleading they almost make it sound like it's a one connection deal for your sonar and everything powers up through your 24v system but thats not the case. Hope this helps good luck.
