I took my work buddy fishing on lake erie last year, he weighs 410lbs!
We both had a great time and caught our limits. I ddi notice my boat was listing and had to adjust the weight to opposite side, he definately needed to remain on the side opposite my kicker, and we had be very cautious when moving about.
Now every time we talk, he say's man lets get out there and do that again. I wish he would lose about 250lbs, there's are actually a couple other guys that want to go too, and it's getting to be that time of year again.
I'm not sure that he realizes that he alone with cooler ice fish fuel and gear fills my boats capacity margin for Lake Erie, I'm thinking about how to go about the discussion at the lunch table, hurt feelings if I sneak out with the 2 other guys, it sucks I really like the guy but he's just huge.

Re: fishing buddys.

Thats a tough situation to be in. Been there myself. My friend knew why the boat was listing and admitted that it was due to his size. He usually always positioned himself to the center of the boat. However when it was time to fish, he always had one side to himself while the other 3 of us fought for position on the opposite side. :D

Big John finally gone through gastric bypass and lost over 200 pounds. That sure made a difference. Sad note is that he commited suicide last fall. He left a note that said that the surgery gave him too many side effects to deal with. He was a good man. Reminded me a lot like SBN in his nature of life.

I think I would talk to him and explain how his weight effects the handling of the boat. It can be real cruicial out on Erie. I'm sure he will understand,,,,,,,,,at least Big John did. Good Luck and I hope things work out...........SS

You could talk to him about renting a bigger boat and split the cost.

Safety should be you, and your friends main concern.

He's one of those guys who truly shows appreciation, offers funding, tries his best, and is always right there to help, looks like I'll just have to make at least two trips this comming season.

As you (and he) probably know:

Your friend is morbidly obese and is a ticking health time bomb. He is susceptible to diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis, heart failure, heart attack, pulmonary embolism and stroke. It is time for a serious talk because he is your friend. Not everyone (in fact very few) persons who have weight loss surgery have such bad side effects that they are suicidal. In fact, most realize that they have a new life.

Best of luck to you and your buddy.

Just take him fishing. I'm sure he Knows he is overweight and what possible health conditions could be looming in his future. Might be he likes for the fact your not shallow and you don't pester him about his weight.

It is never an easy topic when you go talking to someone about a physical defect (even if it's just weight) but as a friend you do need to express your concern for your friend. We all care about our friends and want to keep them around as long as possible( it helps with the fuel expense:D and some times they are so greatful they clean all the fish:eek:) but I would't mention it more than once.

I know this because even though I carry my weight well and don't look it I have been told by my doctor that I am only severely obeese I am 5'10" and weigh 238# by the body mass index I should weigh 132-174# HAHA like that'll ever happen I havent been less than 200 since 1987

Best of luck with your dilemma, hope it works out for you.

He knows he's a big guy. Seems you enjoy fishing with him, so I would just explain to him that he is welcome to go fishing with you 'anytime' (be careful how you word that, might be interpreted by many as 'all the time'), but because of the boat (blame it on the boat's capacity), he can only go when it's just the 2 of you. It kinda sucks for him, he'll probably feel left out on the occasions when you take the other guys out, but he should understand.

Re: fishing buddys.

Is his name Herb by any chance?

My dad had a good freind who liked to fish. He was a really big guy and my dad was unsure if his boat could handle it. Herb was supper nice, he'd give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. My dad really wanted to take him fishing so he called me and my buddy to come out and do some figuring.

We "guesstimated" his weight and launched dads boat. Then we put what we thought would be about right in the area of the seat where he would sit.

It was not good. We moved some gear around, removed ALL of the "non-essential" gear and equipment from of the boat and got her somewhat steady.

My dad got the biggest darn jacket he could find for Herb, called him up and the two of them fished together many times for a long time and had a blast. Herb and my dad got let go due to company cut backs and Herb left town and my dad lost a good fishing buddy.

So, I suppose the basis of my story is, if you like fishing with this guy and are good friends, you'll find a way to be more comfortable with him in the boat. My dad did it, and he is the most (insert word here) man I know.

Yeah Jim same thing here, I have been borderline diabetic my whole life,(every one of my aunts and uncles are diabetic on both sides of my family some with type 1)and became diabetic at 39 Yo. I was in an accident and went from working 60-80 hours a week to a completly sedentary life style.

when I was 20 I weighed 198 and was below 7% body fat. I was very fit, and just can't do the exercise any more. I have 10 screws 2 rods and a plate on my spine from the accident. I am trying to change my eating habbits, and it's starting to help just not very fast.

Thanks for the voice of reason and experience. What you did (losing 60 pounds) was right. I once carried 210, but feel so much better at 180 (6'2"). The blood pressure went to normal.

I too had a bad fall (32ft) crushed ankle broken leg and a host of other things I have 10 screws and two plates, ankle only has 10 percent use but I came into this world with 10 digits and I am leaving with 10 if I have anything to say about it:D:D

A good buddy of mine is the same way, we stick to golfing together. Good thing we live in flat Florida, the electric cart would never make it 18 holes on a hilly course.
